Today's scores and summaries:

Brewers 11, Orioles 8 at Baltimore (night game):
A four-run rally in the eighth inning lifted the Brewers to an 11-8 victory over the Orioles. Milwaukee was behind, 8-7, going into the eighth, but tied the game on singles by Robin Yount, Cecil Cooper and Ben Oglivie. After Tim Stoddard replaced Tippy Martinez on the hill for the Birds, a single by Gorman Thomas plated Cooper with the go-ahead marker. One out later, a double by Jim Gantner drove home two more runs.

Red Sox 8, Yankees 5 at Boston (night game):
Scoring seven runs in the eighth inning after two were out and nobody on base, the Red Sox posted an 8-5 triumph over the Yankees. It was the first Bosox win over the Yanks at Fenway Park since 1979. The winning surge began when Jim Rice stroked a two-out single. After Carl Yastrzemski walked, a single by Carney Lansford plated Rice. Dave Stapleton followed with an RBI double and Lansford scored when right fielder Reggie Jackson misplayed the ball. After Tony Perez walked, a pinch-single by Joe Rudi tied the game. Rick Miller then blasted a three-run homer to climax the outburst.

A's 2, White Sox 1 at Chicago (day game):
Pushing across a run in the top of the ninth inning, the A's edged the White Sox, 2-1, as Rick Langford recorded his 16th complete game. Dave McKay began the ninth with a single and advanced to second on a balk. McKay stayed at second as Jeff Newman grounded out but reached third on a single by Rob Picciolo. Rickey Henderson then delivered a fly to center and McKay scored after the catch. Greg Luzinski homered for the Pale Hose in the sixth and Dwayne Murphy did likewise for the A's in the eighth.

Tigers 4, Indians 3 at Cleveland (day game):
The Tigers ended their five-game losing streak by shading the Indians, 4-3. Detroit overcame a 2-1 deficit in the sixth inning on a double by Steve Kemp and two-run homer by Champ Summers. Stan Papi provided needed insurance with a leadoff round-tripper in the seventh. The Indians scored once in the ninth and had the tying run at third with one out, only to have pinch-runner Miguel Dilone thrown out at the plate while attempting to score on an infield grounder.

Mariners 4, Royals 1 at Seattle (night game):
Richie Zisk, Dan Meyer and Paul Serna hit sixth-inning homers to power the Mariners to a 4-1 triumph over the Royals. Zisk's blast came on K.C. starter Jim Wright's first pitch of the sixth and broke a 0-0 tie. Meyer greeted reliever Paul Splittorff with his circuit swat with Jeff Burroughs on base via a single. The next batter, Serna, took Splittorff downtown on a 1-0 pitch.

Rangers 6, Twins 0 at Texas (night game):
Yielding only two infield singles -- by Sal Butera with two out in the eighth and Hosken Powell in the ninth -- Doc Medich hurled the Rangers to a 6-0 blanking of the Twins. The Rangers scored all their runs in the second inning on an RBI single by Mark Wagner, two-run single by Bump Wills, RBI singles by Mickey Rivers and Al Oliver, and a run-scoring double by Leon Roberts.

Blue Jays 6, Angels 4 at Toronto (day game):
Ernie Whitt and John Mayberry led the attack as the Blue Jays downed the hapless Angels, 6-4. Whitt broke a 3-3 tie with a two-out, two-run double in the fifth inning and Mayberry, who had slammed a two-run homer in the first, delivered a run-scoring single in the seventh. The loss was the 13th in the last 14 games for California.

Reds 7, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Brilliant relief pitching by Joe Edelen, who hurled scoreless ball over the last six innings, enabled the Reds to prevail over the Dodgers, 7-3. The Reds wiped out an early 2-0 Los Angeles lead when George Foster doubled home three runs in the third inning. Ken Griffey stroked a two-run single in the fourth and Ray Knight and Ron Oester delivered run-scoring singles in the seventh.

Cubs 2, Expos 1 at Montreal (day game):
A two-run triple by Bill Buckner and the combined six-hit pitching of Mike Krukow and Randy Martz enabled the Cubs to edge the Expos, 2-1. Bobby Bonds led off the fourth inning with a double and Ivan DeJesus stroked a single before Buckner drilled his three-bagger. The Expos' lone marker came in the fifth on a leadoff triple by Chris Speier and a single by Bill Lee.

Mets 6, Cardinals 2 at New York (day game):
Homers by Hubie Brooks and Dave Kingman backed the six-hit pitching of Pete Falcone as the Mets defeated the Cardinals, 6-2. The Mets scored three runs in their first turn at bat on a sacrifice fly by Mike Howard and two-run round tripper by Brooks. Kingman clouted a three-run blast in the sixth stanza.

Phillies 8, Pirates 2 at Philadelphia (day game):
A three-run homer by Gary Matthews climaxed a five run fourth inning that carried the Phillies to an 8-2 victory over the Pirates. Trailing, 2-1, the Phillies took the lead in the fourth on a triple by Larry Bowa, single by Manny Trillo, bunt single by Dan Larson and double by Lonnie Smith. One out later, Matthews hit for the circuit. The loss ended Pittsburgh's four-game winning skein.

Padres 6, Braves 3 at San Diego (night game):
A three-run outburst in the eighth inning carried the Padres to a 6-3 decision over the Braves. The game was tied, 3-3, when Ruppert Jones drilled a two-out two-bagger and Terry Kennedy followed with a run-scoring single. San Diego added two more tallies later in the frame on an RBI single by Luis Salazar and a throwing error by Atlanta center fielder Brett Butler. Eric Show, pitching the final two innings, picked up his first major league victory.

Astros 8, Giants 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Vern Ruhle cracked a two-run double and pitched a four-hitter in leading the Astros to an 8-1 triumph over the Giants. The winning pitcher's two-bagger came in the second inning after Craig Reynolds had tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single. Alan Ashby belted a solo homer in the eighth.
