Orioles 5, A's 3 at Baltimore (night game):
A three-run homer by Terry Crowley and two bases-empty round-trippers by John Lowenstein powered the Orioles to a 5-3 victory over the A's. Crowley's blast came in the sixth inning and tied the game at 3-3, and Lowenstein immediately followed with his first four-ply wallop. Lowenstein then provided insurance with an eighth-inning smash.
Red Sox 12, Mariners 5 at Boston (day game):
A six-run explosion in the fifth inning propelled the Red Sox to a 12-5 victory over the Mariners. The Sox trailed, 5-2, in the fifth frame but put together six tallies on an RBI double by Jerry Remy, RBI triple by Dwight Evans, run-scoring grounder by Joe Rudi, run-scoring singles by Dave Stapleton and Rick Miller and a sacrifice fly by Gary Allenson. Remy, besides drilling his two-bagger in the fifth, singled in the first, beat out a bunt in the third and collected an infield hit in the sixth.
Blue Jays 3, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Jim Clancy and Joey McLaughlin combined on a five-hitter to hurl the Blue Jays to a 3-1 triumph over the White Sox. The game was tied, 1-1, in the seventh inning when the Jays loaded the bases on singles by Garth Iorg and Al Woods and an error by Sox shortstop Bill Almon. John Mayberry then lined a pinch-single to plate the go-ahead run. the Jays closed the scoring with a run in the ninth on an RBI single by Jesse Barfield.
[DH] Indians 4, Angels 2 (day game) / Indians 4, Angels 2 at Cleveland (day game):
The Indians captured both ends of a twin bill from the Angels by scores of 4-2. The Tribe erupted for three runs in the fifth inning of the lidlifter to break a 1-1 deadlock. Jorge Orta opened with a walk and reached second on a single by Karl Pagel, the rookie's first major league hit. After Pat Kelly walked to fill the bases, Orta scored on a sacrifice fly by Toby Harrah and Pagel tallied on a passed ball. Pinch-hitter Bo Diaz received an intentional base on balls and Jerry Dybzinski capped the rally with an RBI single. In the nghtcap, Tom Brennan, making his first major league start, was the winning pitcher. The Indians scored in the first inning on a wild pitch and picked up three runs in the second stanza on an RBI double by Von Hayes, run-scoring single by Duane Kuiper and run-scoring double by Rick Manning.
Yankees 2, Royals 1 at Kansas City (day game):
Graig Nettles walked twice, doubled and scored both N.Y. runs as the Yankees edged the Royals, 2-1, behind the combined seven-hit pitching of Dave Righetti and Rich Gossage. Nettles walked to open the fifth inning and two outs later scored on a double by Willie Randolph. After the Royals tied the game in the sixth on an RBI single by Amos Otis, Nettles led off the seventh with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Dennis Werth and tallied on a sacrifice fly by Larry Milbourne.
Brewers 5, Twins 3 at Minnesota (day game):
Jim Slaton had a no-hitter for eight innings but was knocked out of the box in the ninth although receiving credit for the victory as the Brewers downed the Twins, 5-3. The Brewers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Ted Simmons and stretched the margin to 3-0 in the third on a walk, RBI double by Cecil Cooper and run-scoring single by Simmons. Roy Howell and Paul Molitor also collected RBI singles in the sixth and ninth frames, respectively. Sal Butera spoiled Slaton's bid with a leadoff single in the ninth. When Kent Hrbek followed with a single and Hosken Powell unloaded a three-run homer, Slaton was derricked in favor of Rollie Fingers, who notched his 22nd save.
Tigers 1, Rangers 0 at Texas (night game):
Four-hit pitching by Dan Petry carried the Tigers to a 1-0 blanking of the Rangers. The game's only run came in the second inning when Kirk Gibson walked, reached third on a single by Richie Hebner and, one out later, crossed the plate as Bill Fahey grounded out to shortstop.
Dodgers 4, Cardinals 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
A pinch-homer by Dusty Baker leading off the bottom of the 11th inning gave the Dodgers a 4-3 victory over the Cardinals. St. Louis had tied the game in the top of the seventh on a bases-loaded walk to pinch-hitter Darrell Porter. Rookie hurler Tom Niedenfuer pitched the final three innings to earn the victory and boost his record to 3-0.
Expos 5, Astros 2 at Montreal (day game):
The Expos ended the Astros' nine-game winning streak, recording a 5-2 triumph behind the eight-hit pitching of Ray Burris. Andre Dawson cracked a two-run homer in the first inning and Montreal tallied twice in the third stanza on a run-scoring forceout by Gary Carter and errant throw by Houston second baseman Phil Garner. Tim Raines drilled a solo homer in the seventh.
Mets 4, Braves 2 at New York (day game):
Neil Allen notched his 15th save of the season as the Mets defeated the Braves, 4-2. The Mets scored twice in the first inning on a triple by Lee Mazzilli, double by Hubie Brooks on a fly to left that was lost in the sun by Eddie Miller and a bloop double by Ellis Valentine. Valentine delivered a sacrifice fly in the third and Mookie Wilson stroked a run-scoring single in the sixth.
Phillies 5, Reds 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
A two-run single by Pete Rose in the eighth inning lifted the Phillies to a 5-4 decision over the Reds. After George Foster slammed a solo homer in the top of the eighth to give the Reds a 4-3 lead, the Phils loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame on a two-out walk to Greg Gross, single by Manny Trillo and walk to Lonnie Smith. Rose then delivered the game-winning blow.
Pirates 2, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
The Pirates edged the Padres, 2-1, as Rod Scurry saved the game with 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief. The Bucs scored in the second inning on a two-out double by Lee Lacy and single by Steve Nicosia. They made it 2-0 in the fourth when Jason Thompson walked with one out and came around on singles by Mike Easler and Lacy. The Padres' run came in the seventh on a two-out triple by Broderick Perkins and single by Ozzie Smith.
Cubs 8, Giants 2 at San Francisco (day game):
Driving in four runs with a homer and double, Bill Buckner led the Cubs to an 8-2 triumph over the Giants. Mike Krukow, who struck out 11, went the route for the first time this season. Buckner hit a three-run homer in the first inning and doubled home another marker in the seventh. Steve Henderson drilled a two-run triple in the seventh and also scored three times.
