Today's scores and summaries:

A's 8, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
A three-run homer by Wayne Gross in the first inning triggered the A's to an 8-3 triumph over the White Sox. The round-tripper followed a leadoff single by Rickey Henderson and a walk to Dwayne Murphy. The A's tallied in the fourth frame on an RBI infield out by Henderson and in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Cliff Johnson. Brian Kingman spaced seven hits in a route-going performance.

Indians 4, Red Sox 1 at Cleveland (night game):
A pair of homers by Toby Harrah sparked the Indians to a 4-1 triumph over the Red Sox. His first blast came in the second inning after a single by Bo Diaz and staked the Tribe to a 2-0 lead. Harrah walked in the fourth and scored on a single by Tom Veryzer, and led off the sixth with his second round-tripper.

Tigers 4, Brewers 1 at Detroit (night game):
Dan Schatzeder, going 8 1/3 innings, picked up his third victory and Kevin Saucier recorded his sixth save as the Tigers downed the Brewers, 4-1. The Tigers scored in the second inning when Richie Hebner singled, went to third on a single by Champ Summers and came home on a sacrifice fly by Kirk Gibson. They made it 3-0 in the third on a sacrifice fly by Lynn Jones and RBI double by Hebner. Steve Kemp clouted a solo homer in the eighth.

Royals 12, Mariners 9 at Kansas City (night game):
A grand slam by Jerry Grote -- his first homer since 1976 -- highlighted an eight-run fifth inning as the Royals outslugged the Mariners, 12-9. Grote, who ended a two-year retirement and earned a spot on the Royals as a free agent in spring training, also slapped a two-run double in the fourth and RBI single in the sixth for a K.C. club record of seven RBIs in a game. The Royals rallied in the fifth by sending 14 batters to the plate to overcome a 5-3 deficit. Amos Otis, Lee May and George Brett singled home runs and Frank White doubled home another in an outburst that was aided by six walks. Tom Paciorek hit two homers for the Mariners.

Rangers 6, Twins 3 at Minnesota (night game):
Scattering eight hits, Rick Honeycutt pitched the Rangers to a 6-3 decision over the Twins. Texas scored in the second inning on a solo homer by Buddy Bell and added singletons in the third and fifth frames, respectively, on an RBI single by Al Oliver and run-scoring double by Mickey Rivers. Bump Wills tripled home a sixth-ining tally and slapped a two-run single in the eighth.

Yankees 2, Orioles 0 at New York (night game):
A homer by Graig Nettles in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted the Yankees to a 2-0 triumph over the Orioles. Dave Winfield got a one-out infield single in the 11th and, one out later, Nettles connected for the circuit. The Orioles had a runner on third base with nobody out in the top of the 10th but failed to score as Ron Davis retired the side on an infield out, strikeout and fly.

Angels 17, Blue Jays 6 at Toronto (night game):
Rick Burleson went 5-for-5 and drove in three runs and Brian Downing blasted a three-run homer to highlight a six-run fifth inning as the Angels enjoyed a 17-6 rout of the Blue Jays. The Angels overcame a 2-1 deficit in the fifth frame on an RBI single by Butch Hobson and an error by left fielder George Bell, a run-scoring single by Burleson, RBI single by Dan Ford, error by Toronto shortstop Alfredo Griffin and sacrifice fly by Don Baylor.

Braves 4, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
First-inning homers by Brian Asselstine and Dale Murphy powered the Braves to a 4-2 triumph over the Dodgers. Jerry Royster began the game with a single and Asselstine followed with a round-tripper. After two outs, Murphy connected for the circuit. Pedro Guerrero clouted a two-run homer for the Dodgers in the fourth to cut the margin to 3-2, but Atlanta picked up another tally in the fifth when Rufino Linares singled, stole second and came in on a single by Chris Chambliss.

Mets 6, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Scoring four runs after two were out in the eighth inning, the Mets subdued the Phillies, 6-2. New York took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Frank Taveras singled, stole second and tallied on a single by Lee Mazzilli. Taveras began the eighth-inning uprising with a two-out single and stole second. After Mike Jorgensen walked, Dave Kingman doubled home Taveras, Jorgensen scored on a wild pitch, and an error by third baseman Mike Schmidt permitted the final two runs.

Pirates 3, Cubs 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Jason Thompson belted a two-run pinch-homer in the eighth inning that enabled the Pirates to edge the Cubs, 3-2. Thompson's blast followed a one-out pinch-single by John Milner and scored pinch-runner Lee Lacy, who had stolen second base and reached third on a throwing error by Cubs catcher Jody Davis. Chicago had taken a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth on a leadoff triple by Jim Tracy that was followed by a homer by Hector Cruz.

Astros 6, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Don Sutton scattered seven hits in going the distance as the Astros defeated the Padres, 6-1. Houston broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning on a single by Alan Ashby, sacrifice by Sutton and double by Terry Puhl. Denny Walling accounted for one of the Astros' two runs in the seventh and singled home two more runs in the ninth.

Reds 6, Giants 2 at San Francisco (night game):
Frank Pastore, going the distance for the second time this season, pitched a six-hitter to give the Reds a 6-2 victory over the Giants. The Reds struck for two runs in the first inning when Ron Oester stroked a one-out double. Ken Griffey bunted safely and George Foster singled home the first run. After Dave Concepcion contributed another single to load the bases, Ray Knight hit a sacrifice fly. Concepcion, who had seven hits in 13 at-bats for the three game series, added run-scoring doubles in the fifth and seventh.

Cardinals 3, Expos 2 at St. Louis (night game):
A triple by Orlando Sanchez keyed the Cardinals to an 11-inning 3-2 victory over the Expos. The game was tied, 2-2, when Sanchez began the bottom of the 11th with a triple. After pinch-hitter Steve Braun was called out on strikes, Tommy Herr singled through the drawn-in infield to end the game. The Redbirds had deadlocked the contest in the 10th on a leadoff homer by George Hendrick after the Expos had broken a 1-1 tie in the top of the frame on a run-scoring single by Tim Raines.
