Today's scores and summaries:

A's 5, Angels 1 at California (night game):
Completing the four-game series sweep, the undefeated A's posted their eighth straight victory, 5-1 over the Angels. The A's broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the sixth inning, the first tally coming in on an error by Angels first baseman Rod Carew and the other two runs on a double by Tony Armas.

Indians 1, Brewers 0 at Milwaukee (day game):
Six-hit pitching by Wayne Garland carried the Indians to a 1-0 triumph over the Brewers in Milwaukee's home opener. The Indians' run came in the second inning when Toby Harrah drew a one-out walk and, one out later, tallied on a double by Bo Diaz. The Brewers put a man on third with one out in the ninth but Garland struck out Larry Hisle and got Ted Simmons on a grounder to end the game.

Tigers 2, Blue Jays 0 at Toronto (night game):
Three pitchers combined on a four-hitter as the Tigers blanked the Blue Jays, 2-0. The Tigers scored in the third inning on a triple by Ricky Peters and RBI double by Alan Trammell, and added an insurance marker in the fourth on a run-scoring fielder's choice grounder by Lou Whitaker.

Expos 7, Cubs 0 at Montreal (day game):
Driving in four runs while pitching six scoreless innings, Scott Sanderson led the Expos to a 7-0 blanking of the Cubs. Sanderson, who batted .078 last season, cracked an RBI double in the second inning to plate Montreal's first run of the game, and then drilled a three-run two-bagger in the fifth. Pinch-hitter Tommy Hutton singled home the final run in the seventh.

Cardinals 5, Mets 1 at New York (day game):
Homers by Darrell Porter, Keith Hernandez and George Hendrick powered the Cardinals to a 5-1 victory over the Mets. Porter belted a solo clout to tie the game in the fourth inning, and Hernandez and Hendrick connected for two-run shots in the fifth and ninth, respectively. Bruce Sutter pitched scoreless ball over the final 2 2/3 innings to record his second save of the season.

Phillies 5, Pirates 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Three hits by Pete Rose paced a 12-hit attack that carried the Phillies to a 5-3 victory over the Pirates. Mike Schmidt cracked a solo homer in the second inning, and the Phils took the lead for good in the third on an RBI double by Rose and run-scoring single by Luis Aguayo. The other Philadelphia runs came in on an error and a wild pitch.
