Rangers 7, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (day game):
Scattering eight hits, Fergie Jenkins notched his 255th career victory, pitching the Rangers to a 7-1 decision over the Orioles. The Rangers took the lead in the second inning on a triple by Buddy Bell and sacrifice fly by Pat Putnam. A double by Bump Wills and singles by Al Oliver and Rusty Staub drove in three runs in the sixth. Ken Singleton homered for the Orioles' lone counter in the eighth before the Rangers iced the verdict with a three-run smash by Jim Sundberg in the ninth.
Twins 5, Red Sox 4 at Boston (day game):
Homers by Mike Cubbage, Rick Sofield and John Castino powered the Twins to a 5-4 triumph over the Red Sox. After the Red Sox took an early 4-0 lead, the Twins scored three runs in the fifth inning, two on a round-tripper by Cubbage and another on a sacrifice fly by Ron Jackson. Sofield's shot tied the score at 4-4 in the sixth and Castino's blast in the seventh decided the outcome.
Blue Jays 6, Angels 3 at California (day game):
A two-run single by Barry Bonnell highlighted a three-run 10th inning that lifted the Blue Jays to a 6-3 triumph over the Angels. The Jays loaded the bases with one out in the 10th on singles by Al Woods and John Mayberry and a walk to Otto Velez. Bonnell then delivered a ground single to left to drive in two tallies. Velez scored a third run when Angels catcher Dan Whitmer, playing in his first major league game, committed a passed ball on a third strike to Damaso Garcia.
Brewers 7, White Sox 6 at Milwaukee (day game):
Driving in four runs, Robin Yount paced the Brewers to a 7-6 victory over the White Sox. The Brewers shortstop plated a first-inning tally with an infield out, drilled a run-scoring triple in the fifth and two-run double in the eighth. Ben Oglivie connected for his 24th homer in the fifth.
Royals 14, Yankees 3 at New York (day game):
Lashing out 17 hits, the Royals drubbed the Yankees, 14-3. After an RBI single by Wathan started the scoring in the first inning, the Royals erupted for six runs in the second stanza. U.L. Washington drilled a two-run single, George Brett stroked a sacrifice fly and Frank White smacked a bases-loaded triple. Capping their attack, the Royals scored five times in the ninth with a two-run double by Brett highlighting the outburst.
A's 6, Indians 5 at Oakland (day game):
A single by Dave McKay drove in the winning run as the A's outlasted the Indians, 6-5, in a 14-inning marathon. Mitchell Page began the winning surge with a walk and advanced to second on a groundout by Wayne Gross. McKay then shot a line single to center and Page raced home with the decisive marker. The Indians trailed, 5-0, going into the ninth but erupted for five runs as Toby Harrah capped the comeback with a bases-loaded homer.
Tigers 5, Mariners 2 at Seattle (night game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Tigers downed the Mariners, 5-2. The Tigers settled the issue in their first turn at bat with run-scoring singles by Steve Kemp and Champ Summers and two-run single by Al Cowens, who also delivered a sacrifice fly in the third.
Braves 3, Phillies 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Spacing seven hits, Larry McWilliams hurled the Braves to a 3-2 triumph over the Phillies. A sacrifice fly by Bob Horner in the fifth inning produced the Braves' deciding run and handed Bob Walk his first defeat of the season after the Phillies' rookie had won six straight.
Cubs 6, Padres 0 at Chicago (day game):
Lynn McGlothen pitched a six-hitter and Cliff Johnson slammed a three-run homer to spark the Cubs to a 6-0 victory over the Padres. The Cubs scored four runs in the first inning when Ivan DeJesus walked, Lenny Randle was safe at first on an error by third baseman Aurelio Rodriguez, Bill Buckner singled home the first tally and Johnson followed with his round-tripper.
Reds 4, Mets 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
Ken Griffey hit a homer with two out in the ninth inning for his third RBI of the game to give the Reds a 4-3 victory over the Mets. A two-run homer by Lee Mazzilli had lifted the Mets into a 3-3 tie in the eighth.
Astros 4, Expos 3 at Houston (night game):
A throwing error by first baseman Warren Cromartie in the ninth inning permitted the winning run to score as the Astros edged the Expos, 4-3. Jose Cruz led off the inning with a walk. Dave Bergman laid a down sacrifice bunt that Cromartie fielded but threw past second baseman Rodney Scott, who was covering first, allowing Cruz to score.
[DH] Dodgers 4, Pirates 2 (day game) / Pirates 8, Dodgers 7 at Pittsburgh (day game):
After the Dodgers won the first game of a doubleheader, 4-2, the Pirates came back to capture the second contest, 8-7. In the opener, a homer by Steve Yeager snapped a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning and Dusty Baker tripled home an insurance run in the eighth. The Pirates trailed, 7-6, going into the bottom of the ninth in the nightcap but loaded the bases on a walk to Phil Garner, infield hit by Lee Lacy, sacrifice by Bill Robinson and intentional walk to Bill Madlock. Steve Howe then relieved Bobby Castillo on the hill for the Dodgers and passed John Milner to force home the tying run. Ed Ott followed with a single to plate the game-winning marker.
Cardinals 2, Giants 1 at St. Louis (day game):
A triple by Garry Templeton keyed a two-run eighth inning that enabled the Cardinals to shade the Giants, 2-1, behind the four-hit pitching of Bob Forsch. The Redbirds trailed, 1-0, when Bobby Bonds opened the eighth with a double and Templeton followed with his three-bagger. Keith Hernandez then drove home the go-ahead tally with a single.
