The Red Sox bunched five hits for three runs in the fifth inning and defeated the Orioles, 5-2.
Angels 7, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
Don Baylor hit a triple and three singles in five trips to lead the Angels to a 7-3 victory over the White Sox.
Indians 7, Yankees 0 at Cleveland (night game):
With a fireworks show as an added attraction, the Indians drew 73,096 and entertained the largest crowd in the major leagues since 1973 by defeating the Yankees, 7-0. Wayne Garland, continuing his comeback from 1978 shoulder surgery, pitched a two-hitter and posted his first shutout since June 23, 1977. Joe Charboneau paced the Indians' attack, collecting three singles and driving in four runs.
Tigers 8, Blue Jays 5 at Detroit (night game):
After hitting a homer with a man on base in the first inning, Richie Hebner capped a four-run rally in the sixth with a single to pace the Tigers to an 8-5 victory over the Blue Jays. Trailing, 5-3, the Tigers began the sixth with a double by Champ Summers, who scored after one out on a single by Tom Brookens. Moving up on the throw, Brookens counted the tying tally on a single by Lou Whitaker.
Mariners 13, Royals 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Entering the game with a .176 average. Larry Cox cracked a homer and two singles as the Mariners enjoyed their best hitting and scoring game of the season in a 13-2 rout of the Royals.
A's 7, Brewers 5 at Milwaukee (night game):
The A's put together seven consecutive singles for six runs in the fifth inning and defeated the Brewers, 7-5.
Twins 10, Rangers 3 at Minnesota (night game):
The 15th A.L. player to achieve the feat, Ken Landreaux cracked three triples as the Twins defeated the Rangers, 10-3.
Astros 5, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
After pitching 109 innings this season without allowing a home run, J.R. Richard was tagged for two but came out with credit for the victory when the Astros defeated the Braves, 5-3. Richard gave up back-to-back blows by Dale Murphy and Chris Chambliss in the sixth before leaving the game with a 3-2 lead. Terry Puhl then homered in the seventh to provide the Astros' deciding run. Denny Walling had homered earlier in the game.
Dodgers 5, Padres 4 at Los Angeles (day game):
With two out in the 10th inning, Reggie Smith walked and scored after singles by Steve Garvey and Dusty Baker to give the Dodgers a 5-4 victory over the Padres.
Mets 7, Expos 2 at New York (night game):
The three pitchers used by the Mets allowed only five hits among them in a 7-2 victory over the Expos.
Pirates 5, Cubs 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Jim Bibby was kayoed by two homers in the ninth inning but gained his 10th victory of the season when the Pirates defeated the Cubs, 5-3.
Giants 4, Reds 3 at San Francisco (day game):
Making his last appearance in Candlestick Park before ending his 22-year major league career, Willie McCovey delivered a run-scoring single to help the Giants defeat the Reds, 4-3. After taking a 3-1 lead on McCovey's hit in the third inning, the Giants added what proved to be the winning run when Reds reliever Mario Soto walked four straight batters after two were out in the sixth.
[DH] Phillies 2, Cardinals 1 (night game) / Phillies 8, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Getting complete-game performances from Dick Ruthven and Bob Walk, the Phillies beat the Cardinals in a twi-night doubleheader, 2-1 and 8-1. The Phillies' runs off Bob Forsch in the opener were unearned on a combination of singles by Manny Trillo and Del Unser and errors by Ken Oberkfell and Keith Hernandez. Walk pitched the first complete game of his major league career in the nightcap and brought his record to 4-0 since being called up from Oklahoma City (American Association) on May 26.
