Yankees 8, Angels 7 at California (night game):
In a see-saw 10-inning battle, the Yankees outlasted the Angels, 8-7. The Yanks tied game in the top of the ninth inning on a solo homer by Reggie Jack son and registered the winning run in the 10th on a run-scoring single by Bob Watson with two out. Watson's blow drove home Bobby Brown, who had reached first on a fielder's choice and then stole second.
Orioles 3, A's 2 at Oakland (night game):
Yielding only three hits over the last six innings, Mike Flanagan pitched the Orioles to a 3-2 decision over the A's. The score was 2-2 going into the ninth when pinch-hitter Pat Kelly drew a walk, raced to third on a single by Ken Singleton and came home on a sacrifice fly by Eddie Murray.
Mariners 8, Red Sox 7 at Seattle (night game):
A one-out homer by Juan Beniquez in the 13th inning snapped a 7-7 tie, enabling the Mariners to shade the Red Sox, 8-7. The score was tied, 6-6, after nine innings. The Red Sox scored a run in the top of the 11th on an RBI single by Tony Perez, but Bruce Bochte tied it for the Mariners with a two-out homer in the bottom of the frame.
Cardinals 8, Braves 5 at Atlanta (night game):
A three-run homer by George Hendrick in the top of the 10th inning lifted the Cardinals to an 8-5 triumph over the Braves and made a success of Whitey Herzog's Redbird managing debut. The Braves had tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single by Glenn Hubbard before the Cards began their winning surge with a one-out walk by Keith Hernandez. A single by Ted Simmons moved Hernandez to second and brought on Gene Garber in relief of Larry Bradford. Hendrick greeted the new hurler with a blast over the left field fence. Rookie reliever John Littlefield received credit for his first major league victory.
Padres 6, Reds 6 at Cincinnati (night game):
After four rain delays totaling three hours and 26 minutes, the game between the Reds and Padres was called with the score tied, 6-6, in the middle of the 11th inning. All statistics count and the game will be replayed in its entirety at a future date. The Padres led, 6-2, going into the bottom of the ninth, but the Reds knotted the contest on a three-run double by Dave Concepcion and RBI single by Ken Griffey.
Astros 6, Cubs 2 at Houston (night game):
Jose Cruz singled home a first-inning run and singled to touch off a four-run third inning in leading the Astros to their sixth straight victory, a 6-2 decision over the Cubs. The Astros collected six consecutive singles in the third frame with Cesar Cedeno, Alan Ashby and Ken Forsch driving in a run apiece. The final marker of the frame came on a throwing error by Cubs left fielder Dave Kingman.
Giants 3, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Jack Clark blasted a two-run homer in the eighth inning to lift the Giants to a 3-1 triumph over the Phillies in a game delayed five hours by rain. Frisco trailed, 1-0, going into the eighth, when Terry Whitfield drew a leadoff walk. One out later, Clark cracked his round-tripper. Only about 200 fans remained at the end of the game, which concluded at 3:12 a.m.
