Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 3, Mariners 1 at California (night game):
A double by Tom Donohue and single by Rod Carew broke a tie in the seventh inning and led the Angels to a 3-1 victory over the Mariners. Al Cowens had a hand in the Angels' other runs, scoring on an error in the fourth and adding an insurance run with a single in the eighth.

Brewers 8, White Sox 0 at Chicago (night game):
Posting the Brewers' first shutout of the season, Mike Caldwell scattered seven hits and defeated the White Sox, 8-0. Sal Bando hit a sacrifice fly to plate the first of the Brewers' three runs in the second inning. The Brewers iced the decision in the seventh when Ben Oglivie drove in two runs with a single and Bando knocked in a pair with a double.

Red Sox 6, Royals 5 at Kansas City (night game):
Jack Brohamer delivered the Red Sox' first successful pinch-hit this season, coming through with a single in the 11th inning to score Carlton Fisk and beat the Royals, 6-5. Fisk doubled and moved up on a sacrifice before Brohamer snapped a string of eight straight outs by Red Sox pinch-batters.

Yankees 9, Twins 6 at Minnesota (night game):
Ron Guidry gained credit for his first victory of the year as the Yankees defeated the Twins, 9-6. Guidry, who had started four times previously without a decision, was tagged for 10 hits before giving way to Rudy May in the eighth inning. Leading the Yankee attack, Reggie Jackson hit a two-run homer in the first, singled and scored in the fourth and doubled for an RBI in the seventh before Jim Spencer smashed a two-run homer.

A's 10, Tigers 6 at Oakland (night game):
Tony Armas rapped a single and homer, driving in four runs, and Rickey Henderson had three hits and two RBIs as the pair paced the A's to a 10-6 victory over the Tigers. The A's built up an early 5-0 lead, only to have the Tigers threaten with four runs in the sixth. The A's came back to put the game away with five runs in the seventh, three scoring on Armas' homer.

Orioles 7, Rangers 5 at Texas (night game):
With Doug DeCinces and Lee May contributing consecutive doubles, the Orioles rallied for five runs in the eighth inning and defeated the Rangers, 7-5. Trailing, 4-2, the Orioles loaded the bases with a single by Eddie Murray, double by Benny Ayala and pass to pinch-hitter Pat Kelly. DeCinces then hit his double for two runs to tie the score and May followed with another two-bagger to put the Orioles in front. Rich Dauer capped the rally with a single, driving in May with the fifth run.

Indians 6, Blue Jays 1 at Toronto (night game):
Len Barker allowed only two hits in seven innings and Mike Stanton set down the last six batters to complete the Indians' 6-1 victory over the Blue Jays. The Indians settled the issue against Dave Stieb with four runs in the second inning on two walks, a single by Cliff Johnson and doubles by Tom Veryzer and Jorge Orta. The Blue Jays' lone tally was unearned on an error by Joe Charboneau, who dropped a fly by Ernie Whitt, allowing the batter to reach second. After advancing on an infield out, Whitt scored on a single by Rick Bosetti.

Cubs 12, Reds 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
A close game was decided with a Cubs' explosion for eight runs in the 12th inning to defeat the Reds, 12-4. Lenny Randle doubled and scored the tie-breaking tally on a single by Ivan DeJesus. As the inning progressed, Mike Vail knocked in three runs with a triple and Randle, up for a second time, hit a two-run homer.

Expos 4, Giants 3 at Montreal (day game):
Two stolen bases by Rodney Scott led to a run on a single by Ellis Valentine in the ninth inning as the Expos defeated the Giants, 4-3, to snap a four-game losing streak. The Expos scored their initial three runs in the eighth on homers by Andre Dawson and Valentine, but the Giants tied the score in the ninth with a two-run double by pinch-hitter Milt May. In the Expos' half, Scott led off with a pinch-single and pilfered both second and third. With one away, the Giants passed Tony Bernazard and Dawson intentionally, hoping to set up a double play, but Valentine spoiled the strategy with his single.

Padres 1, Mets 0 at New York (night game):
The Padres were held to two hits but scored on an error by John Stearns to defeat the Mets, 1-0. In the second inning, Willie Montanez walked and went to third on a single by Jerry Mumphrey, who was out trying to stretch his hit. Gene Richards walked and was picked off first. The Mets turned their attention to Montanez, who was caught in a rundown between third and home. Stearns then threw wild to second in an attempt to nail Richards and Montanez scored on the error.

Phillies 9, Dodgers 5 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Dodgers' 10-game winning streak came to an end with a 9-5 loss to the Phillies. With the score tied, 5-5, the Phillies loaded the bases in the eighth inning on sucessive passes to Greg Luzinski, Bob Boone and Luis Aguayo. Greg Gross then batted for Ron Reed and drove in two runs with a single. After Gross delivered his hit, Bake McBride also singled to account for an insurance pair.

Braves 6, Pirates 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Braves gained their first victory of the season on the road after eight defeats, and Phil Niekro was a winner for the first time in five decisions this year, scattering seven hits to beat the Pirates, 6-1. Chris Chambliss and Jeff Burroughs each drove in two runs. Jim Rooker, who started for the Pirates, faced only three batters, walking two, before leaving the mound with a pulled muscle in his shoulder.

Cardinals 9, Astros 1 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals knocked out Nolan Ryan during a seven-run outburst in the seventh inning and defeated the Astros, 9-1. Breaking a close game apart, the Cards began their big inning with a double by George Hendrick, run-scoring single by Ken Reitz and double by Tony Scott. Ryan struck out Jim Kaat before giving way to Joe Sambito, who failed to retire any of four batters. Garry Templeton singled for one run and Ken Oberkfell walked to load the bases. Keith Hernandez knocked in two runs with a single and Ted Simmons capped the inning with a three-run homer.
