Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 2, White Sox 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Although getting only three hits, the Orioles beat the White Sox, 2-1, in 12 innings. Pinch-hitter Pat Kelly and Kiko Garcia walked to lead off the 12th and advanced when pinch-hitter Terry Crowley flied out. Ken Singleton was walked intentionally to load the bases and, after Lee May struck out, Al Bumbry lined a single to left to drive home the winning run.
Red Sox 12, Twins 1 at Boston (night game):
First-inning homers by Fred Lynn, Carlton Fisk and Carl Yastrzemski propelled the Red Sox to a 12-1 rout of the Twins. Lynn drove in two more runs in the second stanza with a double and belted a three-run round-tripper in the fourth frame.
Tigers 6, Angels 3 at California (night game):
Driving in three runs, Jason Thompson paced the Tigers to a 6-3 verdict over the Angels. Thompson clouted a two-run homer in the fourth inning. The Tigers scored twice more in the sixth on singles by Lou Whitaker, Alan Trammell and Ron LeFlore and a groundout by Thompson. Lance Parrish belted his 16th homer in the seventh.
Brewers 5, Royals 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Homers by Gorman Thomas and Ben Oglivie lifted the Brewers to a 5-2 decision over the Royals. Thomas cracked his 30th round-tripper after a walk to Oglivie in the second inning. The Brewers scored three times in the sixth. After Cecil Cooper and Sixto Lezcano singled, Cooper scored on an error by center fielder Amos Otis. Oglivie followed with his 23rd circuit clout of the campaign.
Yankees 6, Rangers 5 at New York (night game):
Bobby Murcer hit two homers, including a two-run shot that capped a three-run eighth inning, powering the Yankees to a 6-5 triumph over the Rangers. The winning rally began with one out when Lou Piniella stroked a pinch-double and reached third on an error by Texas right fielder Richie Zisk. A pinch-single by Roy White plated Piniella and knocked out Sparky Lyle, who was replaced on the hill by Jim Kern. After pinch-hitter Bobby Brown struck out, Murcer followed with a long homer to right field.
Blue Jays 6, A's 2 at Oakland (night game):
Scattering six hits while pitching his first complete major league game, Phil Huffman hurled the Blue Jays to a 6-2 triumph over the A's. With the score 2-2 in the eighth inning, Otto Velez walked and Craig Kusick followed with a homer. Roy Howell doubled home two more runs for the Jays in the ninth.
Indians 7, Mariners 4 at Seattle (night game):
The Indians posted their 18th victory in the last 24 games, beating the Mariners, 7-4. The Tribe scored four runs in the first inning on an error by Seattle second baseman Julio Cruz, a triple by Toby Harrah and a wild pitch. Sid Monge bailed the Indians out of a ninth-inning jam to record his 16th save of the season.
Mets 18, Braves 5 at Atlanta (night game):
Alex Trevino and Frank Taveras each drove in three runs and Lee Mazzilli drilled a two-run homer and scored five times as the Mets routed the Braves, 18-5. Mazzilli's circuit clout came in the first inning. The Mets built a 7-0 bulge in the second on a three-run double by Trevino, an error by Brave first baseman Dale Murphy and a run-scoring double by Ed Kranepool. The Mets scored five more times in the eighth, highlighted by two-run singles by Taveras and John Stearns.
Giants 8, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
Getting his first two major league hits in the same inning, Greg Johnston helped the Giants to an 8-2 thumping of the Cubs. The Giants trailed, 2-1, when they sent 12 men to the plate in the fifth. Johnston, who entered game in the fourth after Bill North was ejected for arguing the call on an attempted steal, doubled to score John Curtis, who was aboard via a single. Rob Andrews and Jack Clark followed with doubles. A triple by Mike Ivie plated Clark and brought on Dick Tidrow in relief of starter Mike Krukow. Cub right fielder Mike Vail dropped Larry Herndon's fly ball, allowing Ivie to score, and on the throw home, Herndon reached third. Singles by Mike Sadek and Johnston then accounted for the final two runs of the inning.
Reds 2, Phillies 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Pushing across a run in the bottom of the 10th inning, the Reds edged the Phillies, 2-1. Ray Knight triggered the winning surge with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Hector Cruz. After a walk to Paul Blair, pinch-hitter Vic Correll doubled home Knight with the decisive run.
Astros 2, Expos 1 at Houston (night game):
Heroics by Joaquin Andujar carried the Astros to a 2-1 triumph over the Expos. The pitcher unfurled a four-hitter and hit a two-run inside-the-park homer. After Art Howe singled with one out in the second inning and Alan Ashby struck out, Andujar lined his first career homer over the head of center fielder Andre Dawson and raced around the bases to score without a play at the plate.
Pirates 7, Padres 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Posting their fourth straight victory, the Pirates downed the Padres, 7-1, behind the six-hit pitching of John Candelaria. Willie Stargell sent the Pirates ahead in the first inning with a two-run double.
