Angels 4, Mariners 3 at California (day game):
The Angels scored four runs in the ninth inning to beat the Mariners, 4-3. Don Baylor began the winning rally with a single and moved to third on a single by Willie Aikens. Larry Harlow ran for Aikens and Randy Stein replaced starter Rob Dressler on the hill for the Mariners. A single by Brian Downing scored Baylor and sent Harlow to third. Mariner second baseman Julio Cruz then misplayed a grounder by Rick Miller, allowing Harlow to score and Downing to reach third. Miller took second as Downing held third on a fly ball by Bobby Grich. Pinch-hitter Joe Rudi drew a walk to load the bases and Rod Carew then stroked a single to plate the tying and winning runs.
[DH] White Sox 7, Blue Jays 0 (day game) / Blue Jays 7, White Sox 5 at Chicago (night game):
The White Sox won the first game of a doubleheader, 7-0, behind the two-hit pitching of Ross Baumgarten, but then lost the second game to the Blue Jays, 7-5. Jim Morrison homered in the first inning of the opener and a double by Chet Lemon added another marker later in the same frame. A walk to Lamar Johnson, double by Lemon, single by Junior Moore and an infield out gave the White Sox two more runs in the third. The Jays picked up three runs in the opening frame of the second contest, two tallies coming across on an error by third baseman Kevin Bell. John Mayberry, Al Woods and Bob Davis drove in the decisive runs in the fifth.
Royals 7, Tigers 1 at Kansas City (day game):
Making an auspicious major league debut, Craig Chamberlain pitched the Royals to a 7-1 victory over the Tigers, extending the Royals' winning streak to five games. Al Cowens belted a two-run homer in the fourth inning and Amos Otis and Roy White clouted solo shots in the sixth. Chamberlain came up from Jacksonville, where he recently pitched 34 2/3 consecutive shutout innings, one out short of the Southern League record.
Twins 1, A's 0 at Minnesota (day game):
Scattering 10 hits, Jerry Koosman hurled the Twins to a 1-0 victory over the A's. The lone run of the game came when Mike Cubbage led off the seventh inning with a single and scored on a double by Danny Goodwin.
Indians 6, Rangers 3 at Texas (night game):
Driving in three runs with a homer and double, Mike Hargrove paced the Indians to a 6-3 triumph over the Rangers. Ron Hassey led off the Tribe's second inning with a round-tripper and after Duane Kuiper singled, Hargrove belted his circuit clout. Hassey and Tom Veryzer delivered sacrifice flies in the third frame and Hargrove smacked a run-scoring double in the fifth.
Braves 3, Astros 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Phil Niekro notched his 15th victory of the season and 200th complete game of his career as the Braves edged the Astros, 3-2. Barry Bonnell drove in two of the Braves' runs, starting with a single in the fourth. After Rowland Office drove in a run with a single in the fifth, Bonne!l homered for the deciding marker in the sixth.
[DH] Reds 9, Padres 2 (day game) / Padres 5, Reds 4 at San Diego (day game):
With Tom Seaver posting his ninth straight victory, the Reds won the opener of a doubleheader, 9-2, before losing the nightcap to the Padres, 5-4. The Reds broke the first game open with four runs in the third inning. A double by Johnny Bench plated two tallies, a double by Ray Knight added another and an infield out by Dave Concepcion produced the fourth run of the frame. The Padres scored twice in the seventh inning to capture the second game. A triple by Jay Johnstone drove home the tying run and a pinch-single by Jerry Turner scored Johnstone with the deciding run.
Giants 4, Dodgers 1 at San Francisco (day game):
The four-hit pitching of Vida Blue lifted the Giants to a 4-1 triumph over the Dodgers. With the score tied, 1-1, Johnnie LeMaster led off the Giants' seventh inning with a single and two outs later, Bill North walked. Rob Andrews followed with a fly ball that right fielder Mickey Hatcher dropped, allowing LeMaster and North to score and Andrews to reach second. Jack Clark followed with a single to drive in Andrews.
Cubs 5, Cardinals 3 at St. Louis (day game):
A three-run outburst in the seventh inning carried the Cubs to a 5-3 victory over the Cardinals. The Cubs trailed, 2-1, in the seventh when Barry Foote stroked a leadoff single. Miguel Dilone ran for Foote, stole second and scored when Card pitcher John Fulgham threw away a bunt by Steve Dillard. Dillard, who reached second on the error, scored on a single by Ivan DeJesus, who then scored on a pinch-double by Mike Vail.
