Today's scores and summaries:
Angels 8, A's 3 at California (night game):
Driving in three runs with a homer and two singles, Don Baylor lifted the Angels to an 8-3 pasting of the A's. Baylor singled home runs in the third and fourth innings and cracked his 17th homer of the season in the sixth stanza. A bases-loaded single by Dan Ford highlighted the Angels' five-run third inning.
Indians 8, Tigers 4 at Detroit (night game):
A bases-loaded triple by Jim Norris in the top of the 11th inning snapped a 4-4 tie and lifted the Indians to an 8-4 triumph over the Tigers. Gary Alexander led off with a walk and went to third when Jason Thompson threw Dave Rosello's bunt into center field. After Alexander was thrown out at the plate on Tom Veryzer's grounder, John Hiller relieved Aurelio Lopez on the mound and yielded a single to Duane Kuiper which loaded the bases. Norris then lined his three-bagger to right center and Mike Hargrove scored Norris with a sacrifice fly.
Twins 7, Mariners 0 at Minnesota (night game):
Darrell Jackson and Mike Marshall combined on a six-hitter as the Twins blanked the Mariners, 7-0. The Twins put the game on ice with a five-run third inning. A two-run double by Butch Wynegar was the big blow and Hosken Powell and Glenn Adams each drove home a run with a single and Ken Landreaux another with a sacrifice fly.
Yankees 7, Red Sox 2 at New York (night game):
Firing a five-hitter, Tommy John became the league's first 12-game winner as the Yankees triumphed over the Red Sox, 7-2. Jim Spencer hit a solo homer for the Yankees in the fifth inning and Reggie Jackson smacked a bases-empty round-tripper in the sixth stanza. The Bronx Bombers tallied four times in the seventh frame on an RBI triple by Willie Randolph, squeeze bunt by Bobby Murcer and two-run single by Lou Piniella.
Rangers 2, Orioles 0 at Texas (night game):
Scattering seven hits, Steve Comer hurled the Rangers to a 2-0 whitewashing of the Orioles. With one out in the second inning, Richie Zisk doubled and Johnny Grubb walked. Jim Sundberg then followed with a double up the alley in left center, scoring both runners.
Expos 5, Cubs 0 at Chicago (day game):
Steve Rogers scattered eight hits in hurling his fifth shutout of the season as the Expos downed the Cubs, 5-0. The Expos scored in the first inning when Gary Carter's pop fly was lost in the sun by Cub shortstop Ivan DeJesus and fell for a double, scoring Andre Dawson, who had singled and moved to second when Tony Perez was hit by a pitch. Run-scoring singles by Larry Parrish and Chris Speier made it 3-0 in the sixth and Ellis Valentine's two-run single in the seventh closed the scoring.
Phillies 6, Mets 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
A three-run homer by Manny Trillo triggered the Phillies to a 6-2 decision over the Mets. The Phils trailed, 2-1, going into the bottom of the fourth inning, when Greg Luzinski stroked a one-out single and Mike Schmidt followed with a walk. Garry Maddox singled but Luzinski was cut down at the plate on a throw by center fielder Lee Mazzilli. Trillo then followed with a drive into the left field seats for his first round-tripper of the season.
Dodgers 6, Padres 3 at San Diego (night game):
Steve Yeager belted his second homer of the game with two on and two out in the 12th inning, giving him four hits and five RBIs in the game and powering the Dodgers to a 6-3 triumph over the Padres.
