Today's scores and summaries:
Yankees 12, Angels 8 at California (night game):
The Yankees exploded for five runs in the 11th inning to break a 7-7 tie and go on to a 12-8 victory over the Angels, snapping a five-game losing streak. Reggie Jackson led off the 11th with a walk, took second on a sacrifice and scored one out later on a single by Bucky Dent. Consecutive singles by Willie Randolph, Juan Beniquez, Thurman Munson, Lou Piniella and Graig Nettles brought in four more runs. Tommy John relieved for the Yankees in the ninth, struck out Rod Carew and Don Baylor with a runner on second base and pitched the final 2 2/3 innings to gain the decision.
Tigers 5, White Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
Back-to-back homers by Lance Parrish and Jerry Morales in the eighth inning climaxed the Tigers' 5-2 victory over the White Sox. The Tigers scored their first three runs in the third inning. Aurelio Rodriguez drew a leadoff walk and was forced at second by Alan Trammell. After a single by Ron LeFlore moved Trammell, Lou Whitaker hit a sacrifice fly. LeFlore stole second and tallied on a single by Steve Kemp. A double by Jason Thompson plated Kemp.
Indians 3, Brewers 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Rick Manning drove in all of the Indians' runs in a 3-1 victory over the Brewers. His first RBI came on a single in the opening frame and followed a leadoff double by Jim Norris. After Norris slapped a one-out single in the third, Manning belted a homer.
Royals 9, Rangers 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Triggered by a game-opening homer by Frank White, the Royals rapped three Ranger pitchers for 11 hits in pounding out a 9-3 victory. Darrell Porter blasted a two-run homer in the fifth inning.
A's 7, Red Sox 5 at Oakland (night game):
Rallying for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the A's notched a 7-5 win over the Red Sox. The outburst began with two runs on consecutive singles by Wayne Gross, Jim Essian and Dwayne Murphy and a pinch-hit double by Jeff Newman that chased Red Sox starter Bob Stanley. Dick Drago came on in relief to retire Mike Edwards and walk Joe Wallis intentionally to fill the bases. Mario Guerrero fanned, but Mitchell Page beat out an infield hit to tie the score at 5-5. Dave Revering then capped the inning with a two-run single. The Red Sox stranded 18 runners.
Orioles 3, Mariners 1 at Seattle (night game):
Posting their 12th victory in their last 13 games, the Orioles topped the Mariners, 3-1. Ken Singleton began the Orioles' attack with a solo homer in the first inning. Two other runs followed in the sixth on a walk to Dave Skaggs, a double by Al Bumbry and singles by Rich Dauer and Eddie Murray. The latter extended his hitting streak to 14 games. The crowd of 4,015 was the smallest ever to attend a Mariner game at the Kingdome.
Twins 3, Blue Jays 2 at Toronto (night game):
A homer by Ken Landreaux in the sixth inning broke a 2-2 tie, enabling the Twins to edge the Blue Jays, 3-2. Jerry Koosman got credit for the victory, but needed help from Mike Marshall, who pitched hitless relief over the last three innings.
Cubs 5, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Breaking out of an 0-for-14 slump, Bill Buckner cracked two homers and a double to lead the Cubs to a 5-1 triumph over the Reds. Buckner's first circuit clout gave the Cubs a 1-0 lead in the first inning. They added two runs in the second frame and Buckner made it 4-0 with a leadoff blast in the third.
Expos 7, Dodgers 3 at Montreal (day game):
Notching their 10th straight home victory, the Expos beat the Dodgers, 7-3. The Expos' first two runs came in the opening inning on singles by Warren Cromartie and Tony Perez, a double by Gary Carter and an error by Dodger shortstop Bill Russell. The Expos locked up the decision with another pair in the fifth. Andre Dawson doubled and scored on a single by Rodney Scott, who took second on the throw and also scored when Cromartie singled. Cromartie set a club record by hitting safely in his 19th consecutive game, breaking the record established by Pepe Mangual.
Padres 10, Mets 5 at New York (night game):
Striking out 10 batters in six innings, Gaylord Perry, with relief help from Rollie Fingers, gained credit for his 270th career victory as the Padres thumped the Mets, 10-5. The score was 4-4 going into the seventh inning when the Padres took the lead for good on a run-scoring single by Jerry Turner and two-run single by Barry Evans.
Giants 7, Phillies 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Breaking their eight-game losing streak, the Giants whitewashed the Phillies, 7-0, behind the five-hit hurling of Bob Knepper. The Giants picked up three runs in the third inning when John Tamargo reached second base on a double error by Pete Rose, Roger Metzger smashed a triple and Terry Whitfield followed with an inside-the-park homer. Whitfield also drove in a run with a single in the sixth.
Braves 5, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A ninth-inning leadoff homer by Gary Matthews ignited a three-run outburst that lifted the Braves to a 5-2 triumph over the Pirates and gave Phil Niekro his 200th career victory. Matthews' tie-breaking blast was an inside-the-park affair. Previously, he clouted a solo homer in the third inning.
Cardinals 7, Astros 6 at St. Louis (night game):
A dramatic grand slam by pinch-hitter Roger Freed with two out in the 11th inning lifted the Cardinals to a 7-6 triumph over the Astros. After the Astros scored three times in the top of frame to take a 6-3 lead, Tony Scott began the Cards' rally with a single and after one out, Ken Oberkfell and Steve Swisher walked to load the bases. Garry Templeton then struck out, but Freed blasted a 3-and-2 pitch well past the 386-foot marker into the left field bleachers.
