Today's scores and summaries:

Yankees 8, White Sox 5 at Chicago (day game):
Pinch-hitting, Jay Johnstone smashed the third grand-slam homer of his major league career to power the Yankees to an 8-5 victory over the White Sox. Johnstone's blow in the eighth capped a comeback by the Yankees, who trailed after the first two innings, 5-0. Marv Foley hit his first major league homer for the White Sox. Graig Nettles had a round-tripper for the Yankees, who used five pitchers including Ron Guidry, who retired the last two batters to pick up his first save since 1977.

Brewers 11, Orioles 10 at Milwaukee (day game):
The Brewers clouted six homers for a club record but needed a bases-loaded single by Gorman Thomas in the ninth inning to score their last two runs and defeat the Orioles, 11-10. Cecil Cooper hit two of the Brewers' round-trippers, while Larry Hisle, Ben Oglivie, Paul Molitor and Thomas smacked one apiece. Although having only one homer by John Lowenstein, the Orioles led, 10-9, going into the last half of the ninth when Don Money was safe on an error by Mark Belanger, Cooper doubled and Hisle drew an intentional pass to set the stage for Thomas' winning single.

Angels 9, A's 3 at Oakland (day game):
The batting of Bobby Grich, who drove in four runs with a pair of homers, and the pitching of Dave Frost, who yielded only three hits in eight innings, featured the Angels' 9-3 victory over the A's. Willie Aikens also homered for the Angels and drove in another run with a single.

Twins 6, Mariners 5 at Seattle (night game):
A pinch-single by Rob Wilfong in the ninth inning scored Dave Edwards and gave the Twins a 6-5 victory over the Mariners. With one out, Glenn Borgmann walked and Edwards ran for him. John Montague replaced Floyd Bannister on the mound for the Mariners and uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Edwards to take second, before Wilfong stroked his single.

Rangers 7, Tigers 5 at Texas (night game):
In uniform although still recovering from strep throat, Richie Zisk came up as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning and delivered a two-run homer to beat the Tigers, 7-5, for the Rangers' sixth straight victory in the club's best start in its eight-year history. With one out in the eighth, Nelson Norman drew a pass from Steve Baker. The Tigers summoned John Hiller from the bullpen. Zisk then batted for Mike Jorgensen and hit his dramatic homer on Hiller's first pitch.

Blue Jays 8, Royals 6 at Toronto (day game):
A single by Rick Cerone with the bases loaded in the seventh inning drove in two runs and brought the Blue Jays an 8-6 victory over the Royals. A homer by Rico Carty sparked a five-run outburst by the Jays in the second. The Royals tied the score at 5-5, fell behind again and then drew even with a homer by Hal McRae in the seventh. However, in the Blue Jays' eighth, John Mayberry walked and stopped at second on a single by Al Woods. Roy Howell bunted and all runners were safe on a late throw to third. After Dave McKay struck out, Cerone rapped his deciding single.

Dodgers 6, Braves 5 at Los Angeles (night game):
Featuring a bases-loaded double by Joe Ferguson, the Dodgers scored all their runs in the sixth inning and held on to defeat the Braves, 6-5, ending a four-game losing streak. Singles by Davey Lopes and Gary Thomasson, a passed ball by Dale Murphy and the catcher's wild throw gave the Dodgers their first two runs. Phil Niekro loaded the bases by issuing three walks and Ferguson capitalized on the opportunity by clearing the sacks with his double. Bob Welch then helped himself to what proved to be the deciding run with a single that scored Ferguson.

Expos 2, Cubs 0 at Montreal (day game):
With last-out help from Elias Sosa, Ross Grimsley pitched the Expos to a 2-0 victory, continuing the lefthander's mastery of the Cubs whom he defeated for the fourth straight time, including three decisions last season. The Expos scored both their runs off Rick Reuschel in the sixth inning, starting with a homer by Andre Dawson. Rodney Scott followed with a single, Warren Cromartie was safe on a bunt and, after a double steal and an intentional pass to Tony Perez, Gary Carter added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly.

Pirates 7, Cardinals 4 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Ed Ott smashed a homer and triple, driving in four runs, and John Milner, continuing his hot hitting as a sub for Willie Stargell, rapped two singles and a sacrifice fly, accounting for two RBIs, to lead the Pirates to a 7-4 victory over the Cardinals. Ott's homer with a man on base in the sixth inning broke a 3-3 tie and his two-run triple in the eighth clinched the decision for Ed Whitson, normally a reliever. Whitson pitched eight innings before needing help from Grant Jackson in the ninth to quell a Cardinal threat.

Padres 3, Reds 2 at San Diego (night game):
Gaylord Perry triumphed in a duel with Tom Seaver and pitched the Padres to a 3-2 victory over the Reds. Johnny Bench batted in the Reds' pair with a single in the first inning. The Padres tied the score in the sixth with one run scoring on a double by Ozzie Smith and another on a two-bagger by Dave Winfield. In the ninth, Broderick Perkins singled and gave way on the paths to Bill Almon. Pinch-hitter Mike Hargrove walked and Dan Briggs ran for him. Barry Evans, attempting to bunt, forced Almon at third, but Fernando Gonzalez came through with a single, driving in Briggs with the Padres' winning run.

Giants 2, Astros 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Vida Blue made it three complete games and three victories in succession when the Giants' ace lefthander defeated the Astros, 2-1. Blue gave up nine hits but did not issue a pass and struck out eight. The Giants scored both their runs in the fourth on singles by Terry Whitfield and Jack Clark, a passed ball, an infield out by Darrell Evans and a triple by Mike Ivie. The Astros picked up their tally in the eighth with singles by Terry Puhl and Craig Reynolds and a sacrifice fly by Jeff Leonard.
