Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 6, Yankees 5 at Baltimore (night game):
After coming from behind with three runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game, the Orioles pushed across a tally in the 10th inning to beat the Yankees, 6-5. The Orioles' tying trio scored on a walk to Doug DeCinces, singles by Pat Kelly and Lee May, a wild pitch and a single by Al Bumbry. In the 10th, Ken Singleton singled and was replaced by pinch-runner John Lowenstein, who stole second with one out and continued to third on catcher Thurman Munson's throwing error. Intentional walks to DeCinces and Kelly loaded the sacks before a single by Rick Dempsey produced the decisive marker.
Angels 11, Twins 2 at California (night game):
Don Baylor drove in five runs with a double and two singles to pace the Angels to an 11-2 victory over the Twins. Baylor singled in two runs in the third inning, doubled home two more in the seventh and added his fifth RBI with a single in the eighth. Bobby Grich hit a three-run homer in the seventh. Going the route, Ryan struck out 10, the 119th time in his career he has fanned 10 or more in a game, a major league record.
Royals 10, Tigers 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Exploding for seven runs in the eighth inning, Kansas City posted a 10-3 victory over the Tigers. The score was 3-3 when Amos Otis and Darrell Porter opened the eighth with singles and advanced on a sacrifice by Willie Wilson. John Wathan walked to fill the bases and two runs scored on an error by shortstop Alan Trammell. A squeeze bunt by Frank White plated Wathan and two runs scored on a double by Freddie Patek.
A's 14, Mariners 7 at Seattle (night game):
A four-run outburst in the seventh inning broke a 7-7 tie and sent the previously winless A's to a 14-7 triumph over the Mariners. The outburst started when Joe Wallis and Mitchell Page were hit by pitches. John Montague relieved Rick Honeycutt on the mound for the Mariners and yielded a single to Dave Revering that loaded the bases. A single by Dwayne Murphy drove in one run, a single by Jeff Newman plated two more and the final marker of the frame scored on a bases-loaded walk to Miguel Dilone.
Rangers 4, Indians 0 at Texas (night game):
Combining on a one-hitter, Steve Comer and Sparky Lyle, who made his first appearance in a Texas uniform, pitched the Rangers to a 4-0 victory over the Indians. The only Tribe hit was a third-inning single by Ted Cox. The Rangers scored two runs in the second inning after Buddy Bell was hit by a pitch. Oscar Gamble reached first on an error by first baseman Andre Thornton and Jim Sundberg walked to load the bases. A sacrifice fly by Pat Putnam accounted for the first tally and a single by Nelson Norman drove in another. Al Oliver drove in a run with a double and John Ellis hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Reds 9, Braves 5 at Atlanta (night game):
A grand-slam homer by Dave Concepcion highlighted the Reds' 9-5 thumping of the Braves. The shortstop's blast came off reliever Adrian Devine in the fifth inning and gave the Reds a 9-3 lead. George Foster drove in two runs with a single in the first and Ray Knight batted in a pair with a double in the third. The Braves had homers by Barry Bonnell and Dale Murphy.
Astros 10, Dodgers 3 at Houston (night game):
Breaking a 3-3 tie, Cesar Cedeno smashed a three-run homer in the sixth inning to help propel the Astros to a 10-3 triumph over the Dodgers. Ken Forsch, in his first outing since hurling a no-hitter, got off to a shaky start, allowing six hits and three runs in the first three innings, but settled down to pitch shutout ball over the last six frames for his second complete-game victory.
Expos 3, Mets 2 at New York (day game):
A home run by Tony Perez in the 11th gave the Expos their second 3-2 extra-inning victory over the Mets in two days. The contest was marred by an all-out brawl in the ninth when the Expos' Gary Carter crashed into Met catcher John Stearns in an attempt to score. Stearns responded with a series of punches and Carter retaliated. Both benches and bullpens emptied before order was restored. Carter and Stearns were ejected.
Phillies 5, Pirates 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
A homer by Mike Schmidt in the seventh inning snapped a 4-4 tie and enabled the Phillies to prevail over the Pirates, 5-4. The Pirates had a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the fifth, but the Phils tied the contest on singles by Bake McBride and Larry Bowa, a double steal, a walk to Greg Luzinski, sacrifice fly by Schmidt and single by Garry Maddox.
Padres 4, Giants 1 at San Francisco (night game):
With Randy Jones and Rollie Fingers combining on a five-hitter, the Padres defeated the Giants, 4-1. The first Padre run came in the second inning on a single by Jerry Turner, a walk and a double by Fernando Gonzalez, who also drove in another run with a single in the eighth.
