Today's scores and summaries:
Tigers 7, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Driving in four runs with a double and single, Ron LeFlore sparked the Tigers to a 7-3 triumph over the Royals, ending Kansas City's three-game winning skein. The Tigers trailed, 2-1, in the seventh inning when LeFiore hit his two-bagger to plate Phil Mankowski and Alan Trammell, who had both singled. LeFlore added a two-run single in a four-run Tiger ninth.
Mariners 5, A's 2 at Seattle (night game):
Making his American League debut, southpaw Floyd Bannister hurled the Mariners to a 5-2 victory over the winless A's. A single by Ruppert Jones drove home the first two runs in a three-run third inning and the third tally came across on a fielder's choice. Bill Stein had an RBI single in the fourth frame.
Reds 9, Braves 4 at Atlanta (night game):
The Braves lost their home opener and suffered a fourth straight setback in the process as Tom Seaver clouted his 10th career homer and permitted only seven hits while striking out 10 in eight innings for the Reds' 9-4 triumph. George Foster's two-run triple and a sacrifice fly by Johnny Bench started the Reds on their way in the first inning. Bench also slugged a homer.
Dodgers 2, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
Bill Russell's solo homer in the sixth snapped a 1-1 tie and newly-acquired pitcher Jerry Reuss hurled four innings of one-hit ball in relief of winner Bob Welch in the Dodgers' 2-1 victory over the Astros. Dusty Baker doubled to open the Dodgers' fifth, went to third on a grounder and scored on Joe Ferguson's single. That run ended a string of 26 scoreless innings by the Astros' pitching staff.
