Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 7, Indians 1 at Boston (day game):
Taking up where he left off last season, Jim Rice blasted a three-run homer in the third inning to propel the Red Sox to a 7-1 opening-game victory over the Indians. Dwight Evans and Fred Lynn contributed solo shots. Rice's round-tripper was preceded by a single by Jerry Remy and walk to Lynn. Dennis Eckersley pitched seven innings of two-hit ball and was relieved by Dick Drago after tiring.

Royals 11, Blue Jays 2 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals exploded for nine runs in the second inning and enjoyed an 11-2 opening-game romp over the Blue Jays. The big frame, which was highlighted by a bases-loaded triple by John Wathan, included nine hits, four walks and two Blue Jay errors.

Brewers 5, Yankees 1 at New York (day game):
After being held hitless for 5 1/3 innings by Ron Guidry, the Brewers staged a four-run outburst to kayo last year's Cy Young Award winner and post a season-opening 5-1 triumph over the Yankees. Gorman Thomas started the rally with a single and Charlie Moore and Paul Molitor walked to load the bases. A single by Don Money plated two runs. Cecil Cooper and Sixto Lezcano followed with singles to drive in another pair. Mike Caldwell, a 22-game winner last year, scattered seven hits en route to the victory.

Mets 10, Cubs 6 at Chicago (day game):
Making his debut in a Mets' uniform, Richie Hebner stroked a homer, two doubles and a single to pace the way to a 10-6 decision over the Cubs in the opening game of the season for both teams. Hebner's round-tripper led off the fourth inning and tied the game, and he ignited a five-run outburst in the seventh stanza with a two-base hit. A single by Steve Henderson drove home two runs in the big inning. The game was played with winds gusting to 45 miles per hour.

Padres 4, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (day game):
With the winning run scoring on a wild pitch, the Padres tallied twice in the ninth inning to capture a come-from-behind season opener from the Dodgers, 4-3. The Padres trailed, 3-2, entering the final frame when Barry Evans led off with a double and Gene Tenace followed with a walk. One out later, Lance Rautzhan replaced starter Burt Hooton on the mound and issued a base on balls to Kurt Bevacqua. A single by Gene Richards tied the game and the runners advanced on the throw to the plate. With Ozzie Smith at bat, Rautzhan uncorked an errant heave over catcher Steve Yeager's head.
