Red Sox 5, Blue Jays 0 at Boston (day game):
Rick Burleson belted a two-run homer and Jim Rice slammed a solo shot, his 46th home run of the season, as Boston won its eighth in a row and 12 in the last 14 games.

Angels 5, White Sox 4 at California (day game):
Pablo Torrealba walked pinch hitter Merv Rettenmund with the bases loaded in the eighth inning, forcing in the winning run as the Angels downed the Chicago White Sox, 5-4. Nolan Ryan struck out 13 to increase his season total to 260 and improve his record to 10-13. Chicago starter Francisco Barrios was the loser.

Orioles 4, Tigers 2 at Detroit (day game):
Pat Kelly spoiled Detroit manager Ralph Houk's final game by driving in three runs with a pair of homers for Baltimore. Houk announced his retirement Sept. 12, effective at the end of this season.

Royals 1, Twins 0 at Kansas City (day game):
Art Kusnyer singled in Amos Otis, who had tripled, for the only run as three Royals pitchers held Minnesota to two hits. George Throop, who spent most of the year in the minor leagues, pitched three innings of shutout relief for his first major league victory.

Indians 9, Yankees 2 at New York (day game):
The Indians, who had lost six in a row, pounded Catfish Hunter and Dick Tidrow for six runs in the first two innings. Andre Thornton hit a two-run homer in the first while Gary Alexander's leadoff shot in the second snapped a 2-2 tie and touched off a four-run uprising that was capped by Buddy Bell's two-run single. Cleveland's Rick Waits, 15-15, settled down after yielding two runs in the bottom of the first and allowed only one more hit the rest of the way, finishing with a five-hitter.

Brewers 9, A's 0 at Oakland (day game):
Home runs by Larry Hisle and Gorman Thomas backed the three-hit pitching of Lary Sorensen and Moose Haas as Milwaukee finished with its best record ever, 93-69.

Rangers 9, Mariners 4 at Seattle (day game):
Pat Corrales' debut as Texas manager was a successful one as Richie Zisk drove in three runs with a single and a two-run homer and Bobby Bonds added a two-run blast to power the Rangers to a 9-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners. Corrales took over after Billy Hunter was fired as Texas manager earlier Sunday.

Mets 5, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
Closing out the season on a winning note, the last-place Mets downed the Cubs, 5-3. Butch Benton, the Mets' rookie catcher, drove in two runs with his first two major league hits.

Reds 10, Braves 8 at Cincinnati (day game):
The second homer of the game by George Foster, coming with a runner on and two out in the 14th inning, gave the Reds a 10-8 decision over the Braves. Foster's pair of round-trippers gave hime 40 homers and 120 RBIs for the season, tops in the league in both categories. Pete Rose, removed from the game by manager Sparky Anderson in the seventh inning, failed to achieve the 200-hit plateau. Rookie righthander Dan Dumoulin got credit for his first big league win as the Reds closed out the season with a seventh straight victory.

Astros 3, Giants 0 at Houston (day game):
Three pitchers, Joe Niekro, Vern Ruhle and Mark Lemongello, combined to carry the Astros to a 3-0 whitewash of the Giants. Cesar Cedeno batted in one run with an infield out in the first inning and provided another with a homer in the third.

Pirates 5, Phillies 3 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Omar Moreno tied the club record for stolen bases with 70 and Kent Tekulve set a club record for saves with 31 as the Pirates beat the Phillies, 5-3. Moreno equalled Frank Taveras' 1977 mark. Tekulve, who led the league in appearances with 91, broke the team save record of 30, set by Dave Giust in 1971. Odell Jones, making his first major league start, was credited with the win.

Padres 4, Dodgers 3 at San Diego (day game):
