Today's scores and summaries:

Yankees 8, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
Chris Chambliss and Thurman Munson combined to drive in five runs as the Yankees breezed past the White Sox, 8-3. Chambliss knocked in a run with a single in the third and plated two more with a bases-loaded single in the fourth. Munson accounted for two RBIs with a single in the first and a forceout in the fifth. Ken Holtzman, pitching for the first time in 27 days, lasted 5 1/3 innings and got credit for the victory. It was the 10th win in 12 games for the Yankees and the 19th loss in their last 24 for the White Sox.

Indians 3, A's 2 at Cleveland (day game):
David Clyde, who had not won a major league game since May 15, 1974, tossed a four-hitter and Buddy Bell tripled home two runs to spark the Indians over the A's, 3-2. The Tribe pitcher, making his first major league start since September 19, 1975, shut out the A's until Wayne Gross stroked an RBI double in the seventh inning. The second A's tally came across in the eighth on a wild pitch. The winning runs for the Indians were unearned. A's shortstop Marty Perez booted Larvell Blanks' grounder to start the Tribe eighth. After Tom Veryzer forced Blanks at second and Paul Dade struck out, pinch-hitter Mike Vail singled. Dave Heaverlo replaced Bob Lacey on the hill and Bell followed with the game-winning triple against the right-center fence.

Tigers 4, Mariners 2 at Detroit (night game):
Lance Parrish blasted a home run with two out and one on base in the bottom of the 16th inning to lift the Tigers over the Mariners, 4-2. Jason Thompson led off the 16th with a single off Shane Rawley, who struck out the next two batters before serving a gopher ball to Parrish. The Tigers trailed, 2-1, going into the ninth but tied the game when Thompson doubled with one out, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Steve Kemp's sacrifice fly. The Mariners' Ruppert Jones tied the major league record for putouts by a center fielder in an extra-inning game with 12.

Red Sox 3, Royals 2 at Kansas City (night game):
A home run by Dwight Evans in the seventh inning broke a 2-2 tie and produced a 3-2 Red Sox victory over the Royals. Veteran lefty Bill Lee, upping his record to 6-0, pitched out of a ninth-inning jam when the first two Royal batters, Hal McRae and John Wathan, singled. After the Royals got runs in each of the first two innings, the Bosox tied the game in the fifth. A walk to Fred Lynn, single by Evans and sacrifice fly by Bob Bailey produced the first run. Frank Duffy moved Evans to second on a sacrifice bunt and Rick Burleson plated Evans with a single to left.

Twins 8, Orioles 1 at Minnesota (night game):
The Twins teed off on Jim Palmer in an 8-1 pounding of the Orioles. Butch Wynegar slugged a two-run homer to give the Twins a 2-1 lead in the fourth and Hosken Powell blasted a three-run round-tripper in the sixth. It was the rookie's first major league home run. Dave Goltz, making his first appearance since being sidelined a month with cracked ribs, got credit for the win.

Brewers 4, Rangers 3 at Texas (night game):
The Brewers pushed across a run in the eighth inning to edge the Rangers, 4-3. With the score tied, Sal Bando led off the eighth with a single and moved to third on a single by Ben Oglivie. Sixto Lezcano then hit a sacrifice fly to score Bando. The Rangers, trailing, 3-1, going into the fifth, tied the game with John Lowenstein driving in one run with a double and Jim Sundberg producing the other with a sacrifice fly. Sundberg hit safely in his 15th consecutive game.

Blue Jays 5, Angels 4 at Toronto (night game):
Rallying for two runs in the bottom of the eighth, the Blue Jays topped the Angels, 5-4. With the Angels holding a 4-3 lead going into the decisive inning, Tommy Hutton drew a walk with one out and was lifted for pinch-runner Willie Upshaw. Dave McKay followed with a triple down the right field line. Dave LaRoche relieved Don Aase on the rubber for the Angels and was immediately greeted by a pinch-hit double by Otto Velez.

Astros 6, Phillies 1 at Houston (night game):
The Astros jumped on Steve Carlton for three runs in their first turn at bat and went on to post a 6-1 triumph over the Phillies. Terry Puhl hit a leadoff triple and scored on a single by Enos Cabell. Cesar Cedeno followed with a single and Bob Watson drove in Cabell with another base hit. The third run scored on Art Howe's sacrifice fly. The Astros got strong relief pitching from Floyd Bannister, who allowed just one hit in 2 2/3 innings.

Dodgers 3, Pirates 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers got three runs in the first inning and held on to edge the Pirates, 3-2. A leadoff single by Davey Lopes got L. A. moving. A single by Bill Russell moved Lopes to third and after Reggie Smith struck out, Ron Cey drew a walk to load the bases. A balk was called on John Candelaria and Lopes scored. Russell came in on Steve Garvey's infield out and Cey tallied on a single by Dusty Baker. Willie Stargell smashed a two-run homer in the second for the Pirates' runs. It was the 11th homer surrendered by Don Sutton this season.

Reds 5, Expos 1 at Montreal (night game):
Achieving his first complete game of the season while striking out 13 batters, Tom Seaver pitched the Reds to a 5-1 victory over the Expos. Joe Morgan drove in four runs with a homer and double. His round-tripper came in the fifth inning. Seaver led off that frame with a walk and moved to third on a double by Pete Rose. A single by Ken Griffey scored Seaver, and Morgan then stroked the ball over the right field fence.

Padres 7, Cardinals 5 at San Diego (night game):
An error by second baseman Mike Tyson opened the floodgates for four unearned runs in the first inning and triggered the Padres to a 7-5 decision over the Cardinals who went down to their sixth straight loss. Derrel Thomas opened the Padres' first with a single and was sacrificed to second. After Gene Richards walked and Dave Winfield struck out, Oscar Gamble, who hadn't had a hit in his last 16 times at bat, slapped a routine grounder to Tyson, who let the ball go through his legs, allowing Thomas to score. Bill Almon then singled home Richards and a triple by Gene Tenace plated two more runs. A two-run homer by Ted Simmons in the eighth inning pulled the Cardinals to within two runs, but Padre reliever John D'Acquisto slammed the door to preserve the victory.

Giants 4, Cubs 3 at San Francisco (night game):
The batting and baserunning of Mike Ivie highlighted the Giants' 4-3 victory over the Cubs. The first baseman, filling in for the injured Willie McCovey, had two hits, drove in a run and set up the winning run with a stolen base. With the score tied, 3-3, in the eighth, Ivie singled with one out, stole second and scored on a double by Larry Herndon. The Cubs had tied the game in their half on Dave Kingman's eighth home run of the season.
