Ross Grimsley pitched a four-hitter and Lee May hit a two-run homer, his 25th of the season, as th eOrioles drew to within two games of the Yankees in the American League East by beating the Blue Jays, 4-0.

Red Sox 3, Yankees 2 at Boston (night game):
George Scott, who also sparkled with the glove, hit his 33rd homer of the season in the sixth inning to lift the Red Sox over the Yankees, 3-2, completing a sweep of the critical two-game series.

Rangers 9, Angels 1 at California (night game):
The Rangers trimmed the Angels, 9-1, behind the four-hit pitching of Dock Ellis. Willie Horton drove in three runs with a homer, single and sacrifice fly.

A's 8, White Sox 6 at Chicago (night game):
A two-run homer by Manny Sanguillen in the ninth inning gave the Athletics an 8-6 victory that officially eliminated the White Sox from the American League West race.

Royals 10, Twins 5 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals exploded for six runs in the seventh inning to beat the Twins, 10-5, and clinch at least a tie for the American League West title. Darrell Porter hit a two-run homer and George Brett added a two-run double in a seventh-inning uprising.

Mariners 11, Brewers 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
Ray Fosse had four hits and drove in four runs to lead the Mariners to an 11-4 victory over the Brewers. Sixto Lezcano hit a two-run homer for the Brewers in the first to give the major leagues a record season homer total of 3,430, breaking the previous high of 3,429 set in 1970.

Braves 5, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
A fielding error by Enos Cabell opened the door to two unearned runs in the sixth inning that produced the Braves' 5-3 victory over the Astros. Winning pitcher Phil Niekro had 10 strikeouts, bringing his National League-leading total to 252, in his 20th complete game.

[DH] Expos 4, Cardinals 2 (night game) / Cardinals 8, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
The Cardinals defeated the Expos in the second game of a twi-night doubleheader, 8-2, to end their seven-game string of Olympic Stadium losses. The Expos won the opener, 4-2, behind the four-hit pitching of Wayne Twitchell. Lou Brock and Ted Simmons each hit two-run homers in the nightcap.

Pirates 4, Mets 0 at New York (night game):
The Pirates beat the Mets, 4-0, and made a 20-game loser of Jerry Koosman. Frank Taveras broke the scoreless tie in the sixth when he singled, stole second and third for his 65th and 66th stolen bases of the season, then came home as Fernando Gonzalez looped a single to left.

Cubs 2, Phillies 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Ray Burris and Bruce Sutter combined for a seven-hitter as the Cubs silenced the Phillies, 2-0. Ivan DeJesus and Steve Ontiveros delivered run-scoring singles and Sutter was credited with his 29th save.

Reds 3, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
The Reds nailed reliever Rollie Fingers for two runs in the eighth to overcome the Padres, 3-2. Ken Griffey walked and scored on Joe Morgan's triple to tie the game. Johnny Bench then singled to score Morgan with the winning run.

Giants 5, Dodgers 4 at San Francisco (night game):
A bases-loaded single by Skip James highlighted a three-run seventh-inning rally that enabled the Giants to turn back the Dodgers. 5-4.
