Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 6, Yankees 2 at Baltimore (night game):
After the first five batters had come to the plate, the Orioles had four runs on the scoreboard to start on their way to a 6-2 victory over the Yankees, who were stopped on their six-game winning streak. The Yankees staked Ken Holtzman to a 1-0 lead on a triple by Thurman Munson and grounder by Reggie Jackson, but the Orioles struck back quickly. Al Bumbry walked and Billy Smith beat out an infield hit. Ken Singleton drove in Bumbry with a single. After a pass to Lee May, Holtzman uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Smith to score. Singleton moved to third and May to second. Doug DeCinces then batted them across the plate with a single.

A's 7, Angels 3 at California (night game):
Vida Blue continued his mastery of the Angels in Anaheim Stadium by pitching the Athletics to a 7-3 victory. The triumph was Blue's 11th straight over the Angels in their home park since a loss in his major league debut July 20, 1969. Blue gave up the Angels' runs in the first inning, two counting on a homer by Bobby Grich. After the A's pecked away to tie the score, Dick Allen hit the 350th homer of his career in the eighth inning to spark a three-run outburst.

White Sox 10, Tigers 7 at Detroit (day game):
Breaking a tie with a single by Richie Zisk, the White Sox scored three times in the 14th inning to defeat the Tigers, 10-7. Zisk homered in the second and doubled a run home in the eighth when the White Sox rallied to tie the score at 6-6. Eric Soderholm homered to put the White Sox ahead in the 13th, but the Tigers pulled even with an unearned run off winner Lerrin LaGrow in their half. However in the 14th, a double by Ralph Garr, pass to Alan Bannister and Zisk's single snapped the deadlock. A wild pitch by loser Steve Foucault and infield out by Eric Soderholm added a pair of subsequent tallies.

Royals 6, Rangers 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Darrell Porter, John Mayberry and Al Cowens drove in two runs apiece to bat the Royals to a 6-3 victory over the Rangers. Porter accounted for his RBIs with a double in the fourth inning. Mayberry homered with a man on base in the sixth and Cowens capped the scoring with a triple in the eighth.

Red Sox 3, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
In contrast to his pitching performance in two previous starts, Rick Wise yielded only five hits in 8 2/3 innings as the Red Sox defeated the Brewers, 3-1. Wise, entering the game with a staggering earned run average of 54.00, yielded two hits in the first inning but then retired 18 straight batters before Cecil Cooper singled for the Brewers in the seventh. Singles by Von Joshua and Cooper around an infield out produced the Brewers' run in the ninth before Bill Campbell replaced Wise and ended the game.

Twins 5, Mariners 3 at Minnesota (day game):
A three-run rally in the eighth inning that included a pass with the bases loaded enabled the Twins to defeat the Mariners, 5-3. Craig Reynolds put the Mariners ahead, 3-2, with a homer in the seventh, but the Twins promptly loaded the bases in the eighth on a double by Lyman Bostock, single by Butch Wynegar and an error. Mike Cubbage singled to drive in the tying tally. Dan Ford then drew a walk from Stan Thomas to force in the Twins' leading run. An infield out by Rich Chiles added an insurance tally.

Reds 9, Braves 1 at Atlanta (night game):
Led by Dan Driessen, who drove in six runs with two homers and a single, the Reds mauled the Braves, 9-1. Johnny Bench contributed a two-run homer to the Reds' scoring.

Cubs 4, Cardinals 1 at Chicago (day game):
Two intentional passes backfired on the Cardinals in losing to the Cubs, 4-1. The Cubs put together singles by Bill Buckner and Manny Trillo around a walk to Bobby Murcer to tie the score at 1-1 in the fourth inning. Murcer took third on Trillo's hit and Trillo advanced to second on the throw. The Cards then passed Steve Ontiveros to load the bases, but George Mitterwald wrecked the strategy with a two-run single. Another intentional pass filled the sacks in the fifth and Trillo was also walked to force in the final marker.

Pirates 5, Phillies 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Bill Robinson drove in three runs with a double and Frank Taveras batted in two with a triple to account for the Pirates' scoring in a 5-0 victory over the Phillies. John Candelaria, who pitched the first seven innings for the Pirates, allowed only three hits before yielding to Rich Gossage, who finished without allowing another safety.

Dodgers 4, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Steve Yeager broke a 1-1 tie with a homer in the fifth inning and drove in another run with a double in the ninth as the Dodgers defeated the Padres, 4-1. Don Sutton walked four batters in the second to hand the Padres their lone run.

Astros 4, Giants 3 at San Francisco (night game):
Batting with two out in the 13th inning, Joe Ferguson hammered a homer to bring the Astros a 4-3 victory over the Giants. Enos Cabell sparked Houston's earlier scoring with a double and triple and two RBIs.
