Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, Angels 1 at California (night game):
Jim Palmer yielded only two hits in 8 2/3 innings before needing help and the Orioles' ace came away with a 5-1 victory, marking the 14th time that the righthander had defeated the Angels in 19 career decisions. The Orioles had a homer by Ken Singleton in scoring all their runs in the first two innings. Palmer gave way to Dyar Miller in the ninth after the Angels scored on a walk to Rusty Torres, single by Jerry Remy and sacrifice fly by Bill Melton.

Yankees 10, White Sox 7 at New York (day game):
Piling up 17 hits, including four for Willie Randolph, the Yankees defeated the White Sox, 10-7. Chris Chambliss, Mickey Rivers and Thurman Munson had three hits apiece. Chambliss and Rivers each drove in three runs. Chambliss' hits included a homer with a man on base in the first inning.

Tigers 7, A's 3 at Oakland (night game):
Dave Roberts, whom the Tigers obtained from the Astros during the winter, defeated the Athletics, 7-3, with the aid of homers by Rusty Staub and Willie Horton. For Staub, also a winter acquisition from the Mets, the homer was his first in the A. L. Horton hit for the circuit with two men on base.

Braves 3, Giants 0 at Atlanta (night game):
Making a surprise appearance in relief, Andy Messersmith pitched two hitless innings to save the Braves' 3-0 victory over the Giants. Dick Ruthven, now 3-0, was lifted in the eighth with none out after giving up a single and a walk. The Braves scored all their runs in the second, two on a bases-loaded single by Darrel Chaney and the other on a single by Ruthven.

Expos 12, Cubs 6 at Chicago (day game):
Following six innings of rainy action, darkness forced the suspension of the game between the Expos and Cubs with the Expos leading, 11-3. It was completed prior to the regularly-scheduled game of April 22. Rain delayed the start of the contest for 15 minutes and there were further rain delays of 30, 31, 20 and 27 minutes.

Reds 5, Padres 4 at Cincinnati (day game):
Although departing after six innings, Fred Norman received credit for his third straight victory when the Reds defeated the Padres, 5-4. The Reds scored all their runs in the third, sending 11 men to the plate. Don Gullett, making his first appearance of the season, relieved Norman in the seventh, but then had to give way to Rawly Eastwick in the following frame after giving up a walk, a single to Dave Winfield and throwing two balls to Doug Rader.

Astros 1, Dodgers 0 at Houston (night game):
With two out in the 16th inning, Larry Milbourne singled, stole second and scored on a single by Jose Cruz to give the Astros a 1-0 victory over the Dodgers.

Phillies 3, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Mike Schmidt hit his seventh homer in a stretch of four games, one short of Ralph Kiner's major league record, as the Phillies defeated the Pirates, 3-0. Tom Underwood and Tug McGraw combined to pitch the shutout, the first suffered by the Pirates this season. Schmidt's bases-empty homer came in the eighth inning.

Cardinals 7, Mets 4 at St. Louis (day game):
While with the Tigers, Mickey Lolich beat the Cardinals in the seventh game of the 1968 World Series, but the lefthander had different luck making his first appearance in Busch Stadium with the Mets. After leading, 4-2, Lolich was kayoed in the sixth inning and wound up with a 7-4 defeat. Lolich had two hits and scored twice. However in the sixth, Vic Harris doubled and Reggie Smith homered to tie the score. When Mike Anderson doubled, Lolich left the game in favor of Skip Lockwood, who was greeted with a single by pinch-hitter Ron Fairly, driving in pinch-runner Lee Richard. Don Kessinger then doubled to knock in Fairly.
