Today's scores and summaries:

Rangers 5, Angels 0 at California (night game):
Held to five hits by Jackie Brown, the Angels not only lost to the Rangers, 5-0, but Nolan Ryan, who suffered his first defeat, was forced to leave the game in the seventh inning with arm trouble. The Rangers nicked Ryan for a run in the fourth when Lenny Randle beat out an infield hit, stole second and scored on a single by Mike Hargrove. Ryan gave up three more runs with two out in the sixth. Hargrove singled and after Jim Spencer and Toby Harrah walked to load the bases, Roy Howell cleared the sacks with a double.

White Sox 4, Twins 3 at Minnesota (day game):
On the verge of his fifth straight loss, Wilbur Wood came out a winner instead when the White Sox rallied for four runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Twins, 4-3. Bert Blyleven, who had the White Sox in check with four hits, lost his stuff and was removed after giving up two runs on a homer by Carlos May, triple by Ken Henderson and single by Lee Richard. After Tom Burgmeier relieved, Deron Johnson batted for Tony Muser and hit the first pitch for a homer to turn the game around.

A's 3, Royals 2 at Oakland (day game):
With two out in seventh inning, Bill North, Bert Campaneris and Reggie Jackson connected for consecutive singles to produce the run that gave the Athletics a 3-2 victory over the Royals. Gene Tenace homered for the A's in the second, but the Royals scored a matching tally in the third on a double by Bob Stinson, two walks and a sacrifice fly by Hal McRae. After the Royals went ahead with a single by Cookie Rojas and triple by Fred Patek in the fourth, the A's tied the score in the fifth on a pass to Claudell Washington, a sacrifice and single by Campaneris.

Reds 11, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
Exploding for 10 runs in the last four innings, the Reds broke a tight game apart and defeated the Braves, 11-3. Jack Billingham and Phil Niekro were wrapped in a 1-1 duel until the sixth when Tony Perez doubled and scored on a single by Ken Griffey to put the Reds ahead. Having taken the lead, the Reds proceeded to pour it on with four runs in the seventh, four more in the eighth and a final tally on a homer by George Foster in the ninth. Johnny Bench doubled in the seventh and again in the eighth, driving in three runs, and Perez also accounted for three RBIs with a pair of singles during those same stanzas.

Cubs 4, Phillies 1 at Chicago (day game):
Bill Madlock hit two doubles, each driving in a run, to support the pitching of Steve Stone as the Cubs defeated the Phillies, 4-1. Stone gave up the Phillies' tally in the second inning on singles by Greg Luzinski and Bob Boone and a double by Mike Anderson. The Cubs went ahead in the next stanza with two runs on a pass to Don Kessinger, wild pitch by Jim Lonborg, a double by Madlock and an error. The clinching pair followed in the fifth on two-baggers by Jose Cardenal, Madlock and Jerry Morales.

Giants 6, Astros 5 at Houston (night game):
A two-out single by Von Joshua in the ninth inning scored pinch-runner Derrel Thomas and brought the Giants a 6-5 victory over the Astros. Thomas was on base in place of Steve Ontiveros, who had doubled. The Giants, taking advantage of J.R. Richard's wildness, scored three runs in the first two innings, but the Astros rallied to the tie game in the fourth, with two of their tallies coming on a homer by Doug Rader. Wayne Granger, the third of six pitchers used by the Astros, passed Joshua with the bases loaded to force in a run in the seventh, but Gary Lavelle, third of five hurlers to appear for the Giants, returned the favor by walking Cliff Johnson with the sacks filled in the eighth.

Dodgers 11, Padres 6 at San Diego (night game):
Hitless in four previous trips this season, Ken McMullen came off the bench and smashed a grand-slam homer in the sixth inning to climax the Dodgers' six-run outburst in an 11-6 victory over the Padres. Dave Winfield staged a virtual one-man show for the Padres, driving in five runs with four hits, including a homer with two men on base. Ron Cey also hit a three-run homer for the Dodgers, who were trailing, 5-4, before their outburst in the sixth. Steve Yeager started the stanza with a walk and scored the tying run on singles by Lee Lacy and Davey Lopes. Danny Frisella, relieving Dave Freisleben, passed Steve Garvey intentionally to load the bases and then walked Cey to force in a run before McMullen batted for Willie Crawford and hit his homer.
