Today's scores and summaries:

Tigers 3, Red Sox 1 at Boston (night game):
Making the first start of his major league career, Vern Ruhle allowed only two hits in seven innings before giving way to John Hiller, who completed the Tigers' 3-1 victory over the Red Sox. Fred Lynn collected both hits off Ruhle and accounted for the Red Sox run with a homer in the second inning. The Tigers picked up their initial tally off Luis Tiant in the first when Ron LeFlore walked, stole second and scored on the 2,997th hit of Al Kaline's career. After Lynn's tying homer, the Tigers decided the contest in the fourth with two runs on a walk to Bill Freehan, single by Reggie Sanders and triple by Jim Nettles.

Royals 4, A's 3 at Kansas City (night game):
After the Royals tied the score with an unearned run in the ninth inning, Amos Otis singled with the bases loaded in the 10th to defeat the Athletics, 4-3. The Royals counted twice off Vida Blue in the fifth, but the A's pulled even with a single by Bert Campaneris and homer by Joe Rudi in the sixth before going ahead in the seventh when Reggie Jackson singled, stole second, took third on a sacrifice and scored on a single by Sal Bando. With two out in the Royals' ninth, Cookie Rojas hit a grounder that went through Gene Tenace. Fred Patek, running for Rojas, stole second and continued to third on a throwing error by Ray Fosse. Orlando Cepeda then batted for Jim Wohlford and singled to tie the score. In the 10th, Al Cowens hit a one-out single off Rollie Fingers. Paul Lindblad relieved and gave up a double by George Brett and intentional pass to Hal McRae to load the bases. John Mayberry fouled out, but Otis came through with a single for his third hit of the game.

Orioles 7, Yankees 0 at New York (night game):
Completing a sweep of the three-game series, the Orioles shut out the Yankees, 7-0, on the three-hit pitching of McNally and moved into first place by one-half length in the East Division race. The Orioles led by only 1-0 on a fifth-inning homer by Don Baylor before breaking loose in the last two frames. In the eighth, a safe bunt by Enos Cabell, sacrifice by Andy Etchebarren, single by Paul Blair and double by Bobby Grich made it 3-0 and then in the ninth the Orioles turned the game into a rout with four runs on singles by Brooks Robinson, Etchebarren, Mark Belanger and Tommy Davis, two walks and a passed ball.

Dodgers 11, Padres 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
With Willie Crawford and Steve Yeager driving in three runs apiece, the Dodgers rolled to an 11-2 victory, beating the Padres for the 12th straight time this season. Errors by Dave Roberts and Johnny Grubb, a pass to Jim Wynn, single by Steve Garvey and double by Crawford produced four runs in the third inning. Yeager homered after passes to Ron Cey and Bill Russell in the sixth. Crawford accounted for his third RBI with a single in the seventh. The Dodgers completed their scoring in the eighth. Bobby Tolan figured in both Padre runs off Don Sutton, driving in one and scoring one. Mike Marshall made his 98th relief appearance for the Dodgers in the ninth and tied a major league record by finishing a game for the 77th time. The mark was set by Ken Sanders with the Brewers in 1971.

Cubs 7, Phillies 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
Ron Dunn and Bill Madlock batted in five runs between them as the Cubs defeated the Phillies, 7-4, for their sixth straight win. Madlock drove in a run with a single and Dunn two with a double in the first inning when the Cubs scored four times. The Phillies came back with three runs in their half of the first and tied the score in the third on a double by Willie Montanez and error by Dunn. Madlock broke the tie with a run-scoring double in the fifth and Dunn accounted for this third RBI with a double in the seventh. Another double by Andre Thornton wrapped up the Cubs' scoring in the eighth.

Pirates 8, Cardinals 6 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Cardinals left Pittsburgh with a lead of only one-half game in the East Divsion race after losing to the Pirates, 8-6. The Cardinals' relief pitching, which had been magnificent during their drive to first place, finally failed. The Cardinals were leading, 4-3, with one out in the seventh when Manny Sanguillen and Al Oliver singled off Rich Folkers. Al Hrabosky took over and lost his magic against two lefthanded batters. Willie Stargell doubled, driving in two runs. After an intentional pass to Richie Zisk, Richie Hebner came up and smashed a three-run homer. The Cardinals rallied for two runs in the eighth inning on singles by Reggie Smith and Joe Torre and a double by Ken Reitz. Dave Giusti, making his first appearance since September 7 after being out with back trouble, turned in a tremendous relief performance for the Pirates in the ninth. Lou Brock led off with a single and Ted Sizemore bunted safely. Smith struck out. With Ted Simmons at bat, Brock and Sizemore worked a double steal. Brock's theft was his 111th. Unflustered, Giusti whiffed Simmons and then fanned Torre to end the game.

Reds 8, Giants 4 at San Francisco (night game):
A six-run explosion in the second inning, capped with a bases-loaded double by Johnny Bench, propelled the Reds to an 8-4 victory over the Giants. Fred Norman delivered the first run with a single. Two more runs crossed the plate on bases-loaded passes to Pete Rose and Cesar Geronimo before Bench cleared the sacks with his double. A single by Geronimo added a run in the fifth. The Reds completed their scoring with doubles by Rose and Bench in the seventh. Gary Thomasson hit a three-run homer for the Giants.
