Today's scores and summaries:

Twins 7, Royals 2 at Minnesota (night game):
The Twins came up with a pair of three-run innings, got a shutout effort from Bert Blyleven for eight-plus frames and defeated the Royals, 7-2. Steve Braun delivered a two-run single in the third and Rod Carew followed with a base hit for a 3-0 lead. Minnesota kayoed loser Al Fitzmorris in the fifth with three more tallies, Eric Soderholm singling home a pair. Glenn Borgmann hit a solo homer in the eighth for the winners' final run. The Royals spoiled Blyleven's shutout in the ninth when Tony Solaita doubled home Al Cowens, who had walked. Hal McRae, who also had walked, scored on an error by outfielder Braun on Solaita's hit.

Dodgers 7, Astros 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Scoring their first six runs on only three hits, the Dodgers defeated the Astros, 7-2, to maintain a 2½-game lead over the Reds in the N. L. West. Tommy Helms singled home two runs to give the Astros the lead in the second, but the Dodgers got three in the third on a walk, hit batsman, Bill Buckner's single, a wild pitch and throwing error. L.A. made it 5-2 in the fifth with Steve Garvey singling home Andy Messersmith. Buckner then scored on the second error of the inning by Helms. The Dodgers added another unearned run in the sixth on Lee Lacy's double, a passed ball and error by Lee May. Bill Russell's sacrifice fly plated Lacy with the winners' final run in the eighth.

[DH] Expos 3, Mets 2 (night game) / Mets 3, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
The Mets and Expos traded 3-2 decisions, New York's victory in the second game ending Montreal's eight-game winning streak. In the opener, winning pitcher Mike Torrez doubled home one run in the first inning and Ron Woods delivered a two-run single in the seventh. The Mets scored an unearned run in the fourth with the help of two Expo errors, with Jerry Koosman singling home the final New York tally in the sixth. The Mets scored all of their runs in the second game in the fifth, Rusty Staub leading off that frame with a home run and Wayne Garrett singling home Ed Kranepool and Ron Hodges with two out. Tim Foli's sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Mike Jorgensen accounted for Montreal's runs in the seventh.

Reds 9, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
Scoring seven times in the first three frames, the Reds finished with 13 hits and turned back the Padres, 9-2. Cincinnati put the game away in the third with a four-run flurry ignited by solo homers by Dan Driessen and Cesar Geronimo. Pete Rose later singled home another run and a fourth came on a bases-loaded wild pitch. Johnny Bench was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth to force in the eighth Cincinnati run, then drove home Rose, who had singled, with a seventh-inning double.

Giants 4, Braves 2 at San Francisco (day game):
The smallest crowd ever (748) at Candlestick Park saw the Giants' Jim Barr dispose of the Braves, 4-2, in just one hour, 38 minutes on a seven-hitter, featuring homers by Bobby Bonds and Gary Thomasson. Bonds doubled home Thomasson, who had singled, in the first, but Dusty Baker tied the game with a solo homer in the second. A double by Steve Ontiveros and single by Mike Phillips made it 2-1 Giants in the second. Bonds homered with the bases empty in the third and Thomasson duplicated that effort in the fifth. Singles by Frank Tepedino, Craig Robinson and Johnny Oates plus a groundout produced the final Atlanta run in the seventh.
