Today's scores and summaries:

Yankees 6, Red Sox 3 at Boston (night game):
The streaking Yankees scored one run in the first with the help of two Red Sox errors and never were headed as they beat Boston at home for the first time since July 31 of last year, 6-3, and took over first place in the A.L. East. Chris Chambliss homered for a 2-0 Yank lead in the second, but Dwight Evans homered for the Red Sox to cut the lead to 2-1 in the third. New York scored another unearned run in the fourth as Graig Nettles scored when catcher Bob Montgomery dropped a throw, then built their advantage to 6-1 with two more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth. Boston closed out the scoring with a two-run eighth, one marker coming on Carl Yastrzemski's 15th homer.

[DH] Angels 4, Rangers 1 (day game) / Rangers 5, Angels 3 at California (night game):
Chuck Dobson, who last won in the majors in September of 1971, hurled the Angels to a 4-1 triumph in the first of two against the Rangers, who gained a split with a 5-3 victory in the second contest. California got Dobson, whose last win was in an Athletics' uniform over the Angels, three runs in the third inning, two scoring on Bruce Bochte's single. The Rangers used a three-run fourth inning in the second game to wipe out a 2-1 California lead, the rally including rookie Roy Howell's first major league homer which tied the score. Joe Lovitto, Duke Sims, Cesar Tovar and Lenny Randle followed with singles. Mike Hargrove doubled home the Rangers' final marker in the seventh.

Indians 7, Tigers 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Dick Bosman pitched his first complete game since no-hitting Oakland July 19, as the Indians, with Oscar Gamble belting a two-run homer, pinned a 7-1 setback on the Tigers. Ed Brinkman ruined Bosman's shutout bid with a leadoff homer in the ninth. Cleveland scored three in first, two runs coming when Gamble followed a Lowenstein single with a four-bagger. The Indians kayoed Lerrin LaGrow with a four-run third, which included run-producing doubles by Tommy McCraw and Jack Brohamer.

Orioles 6, Brewers 5 at Milwaukee (night game):
Bobby Grich scored the deciding run from third on a wild pitch in the 11th as the Orioles squeezed past the Brewers' Tom Murphy, 6-5. Milwaukee, which had tied the score on a pinch-grand slam by Darrell Porter in the bottom of the ninth, nearly pulled it out in the 11th, Paul Blair saving the game for the Orioles when he made a leaping catch of George Scott's long drive with the bases loaded and two out. Baltimore enjoyed a 4-0 lead after six innings, aided by solo homers by Blair and Don Baylor. The Brewers scored their first run in the seventh, but Brooks Robinson's RBI double stretched the Oriole lead to 5-1 in the eighth. Mike Cuellar, two outs away from his 19th victory in the ninth, got into trouble when he loaded the bases on singles by Tim Johnson and Pedro Garcia and a walk to Don Money. Bob Reynolds relieved and was greeted by Porter's grand slam.

Twins 3, White Sox 1 at Minnesota (night game):
Harmon Killebrew slammed his 558th career homer, a two-run pinch-hit blast in the eighth, to wipe out a 1-0 White Sox lead and help the Twins to a 3-1 victory. Steve Braun followed the Killebrew blast with a solo homer to account for the final Minnesota run. Loser Bart Johnson carried a two-hit shutout into the eighth. Chicago reached Dave Goltz for its only run in the fourth on a single by Bucky Dent, sacrifice by Jorge Orta and single by Ken Henderson.

[DH] A's 3, Royals 0 (night game) / A's 7, Royals 0 at Oakland (night game):
Vida Blue and Catfish Hunter guided the Athletics to a sweep over the Royals with shutout performances. A two-run homer by Gene Tenace and run-scoring triple by Claudell Washington backed Blue's two-hit, 3-0 triumph in the opener. Joe Rudi and Sal Bando each hit homers in the second game, driving in three runs apiece, as Hunter became the majors' top winner with his 23rd victory, 7-0. Bert Campaneris doubled home the other A's tally as the A. L. West leaders moved 6½ games ahead of the second-place Rangers.

Dodgers 8, Braves 1 at Atlanta (night game):
With home run help from Ron Cey and Steve Garvey, rookie Geoff Zahn pitched his first complete-game victory as the Dodgers overpowered the Braves, 8-1. Los Angeles took a 1-0 lead into the third, then wrapped up the victory with three runs, Jim Wynn delivering an RBI single ahead of Garvey's homer. After the Braves had scored an unearned run in the fourth, Atlanta reliever Lew Krausse wild-pitched home Bill Russell in the seventh. Cey's homer came in the eighth after singles by Garvey and pinch-hitter Tom Paciorek.

Cubs 9, Pirates 4 at Chicago (day game):
The Cubs, getting early homers from Jose Cardenal and Andre Thornton, ended the Pirates' six-game winning streak, 9-4, as Steve Stone, with help from four relievers, beat Pittsburgh for the third time in five career decisions. Cardenal and Thornton hit solo shots in the first and second for a 2-2 tie, and the Cubs went ahead to stay with a three-run third, Jerry Morales doubling home two runs and Steve Swisher singling in a third. Singles by Swisher, Rob Sperring, Dave LaRoche and Rick Monday, plus a balk by reliever Ramon Hernandez, accounted for three more Cub runs in the eighth. Chicago used four pitchers in the eighth, when the Bucs scored twice. LaRoche earned the save by fanning Richie Hebner and getting Al Oliver to ground out with the bases loaded.

Reds 8, Padres 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
Fred Norman evened his record at 11-11 despite giving up homers to Rich Morales and Johnny Grubb in the third. He was knocked out of the game in the sixth when a ball off the bat of Randy Elliott struck him on the knee, as the Reds turned back the Padres, 8-3. Reliever Pedro Borbon stopped San Diego cold after taking over with two out in the sixth, but the Padres' Bill Laxton, who relieved starter Dave Freisleben in the fourth, was tagged for homers by Tony Perez and Dave Concepcion during the four-run Reds' outburst in the fifth, which completed the scoring in the game.

Giants 8, Astros 6 at Houston (night game):
The Giants rallied with five runs in the eighth, Gary Matthews driving in two with a double, to defeat the Astros, 8-6. Tito Fuentes singled home the first run of the inning to snap a 3-3 tie, Matthews later stroked a bases-loaded two-bagger, then scored behind Fuentes when Dave Kingman tripled. Lee May cracked a bases-loaded double for the final three Astro runs in the ninth to kayo starter John Montefusco. Elias Sosa then retired Milt May to earn the save.

Mets 7, Expos 1 at New York (night game):
The Mets scored four runs in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie and Ray Sadecki turned in a route-going effort for his fourth straight victory as New York defeated the Expos, 7-1. The Mets added a pair in the fifth on Don Hahn's bases-loaded sacrifice fly and a single by Duffy Dyer.
