Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 2, White Sox 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Homers by Earl Williams and Paul Blair enabled Mike Cuellar to pitch the Orioles to a 2-1 victory over the White Sox in a duel with Jim Kaat. The White Sox spoiled Cuellar's shutout bid in the seventh inning when Ron Santo and Brian Downing walked and Pat Kelly, running for Santo, scored on a single by Buddy Bradford.
Indians 4, Twins 2 at Cleveland (night game):
After losing six straight times since being stopped on his 15-game winning streak, Gaylord Perry gained the victory when the Indians defeated the Twins, 4-2. However, the veteran righthander failed to hurl the route, giving way to Tom Buskey with a man on base in the eighth inning. The Indians scored off Bert Blyleven in the first on a double by Tommy McCraw, sacrifice by Frank Duffy and grounder by Jack Brohamer. Tony Oliva homered for the Twins in the fourth. The Twins loaded the bases in the sixth on a double by John Ellis and two walks and broke the tie with two runs on a single by Duffy. Perry yielded another run in the seventh, but the Indians racked up an insurance marker in the eighth on a double by George Hendrick, bunt by Ellis and sacrifice fly by McCraw.
Cubs 5, Astros 3 at Chicago (day game):
An error by Larry Milbourne, who dropped a pop fly with the bases loaded and two out in the eighth inning, allowed two runs to score and gave the Cubs a 5-3 victory over the Astros. However, all three of the Astros' runs also were tainted on errors by Don Kessinger, Bill Madlock and Rob Sperring. Jerry Morales homered for the Cubs, who trailed, 3-2, before Billy Williams sparked a rally in the eighth with a one-out single for his 2,500th major league hit. Andre Thornton walked and Morales singled, driving in pinch-runner Jim Tyrone to tie the score. Madlock drew an intentional pass, loading the bases. George Mitterwald struck out and the Astros should have been out of the inning when Steve Swisher popped up, but Milbourne dropped the ball as Thornton and Morales scored.
