Today's scores and summaries:
Twins 6, Red Sox 2 at Boston (night game):
A double by Rod Carew and triple by Bobby Darwin highlighted a four-run outburst in the eighth inning as the Twins defeated the Red Sox, 6-2. Jim Holt and Larry Hisle started the uprising with singles. Carew's double drove in Holt to break a 2-2 tie. Then, after an intentional pass to Tony Oliva loaded the bases, Darwin iced the Twins' victory with his triple.
Orioles 3, Angels 1 at California (night game):
Nolan Ryan pitched seven hitless innings in a bid for his second consecutive no-hitter and third of the season, but luck was against the Angels' ace, who eventually lost to the Orioles in 11 innings, 3-1. Mark Belanger singled in the eighth for the Orioles' first hit and added another single in the ninth. When Tommy Davis doubled with one out in the 11th for the Orioles' third hit, Angels' manager Bobby Winkles removed Ryan and brought in Dave Sells. Paul Blair grounded out, but Elrod Hendricks walked and Terry Crowley then doubled to drive in two runs. The Orioles' initial run in the first came without the benefit of a hit on a pass to Rich Coggins, a stolen base, wild pitch and infield out by Davis. Frank Robinson homered in the fourth for the Angels' run off Mike Cuellar, who pitched the route for the Orioles on a yield of nine hits.
Brewers 4, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
After pitching six hitless innings, Skip Lockwood tired in the seventh and Eduardo Rodriguez took over to complete the Brewers' 4-1 victory over the Rangers. Lockwood gave up a single to Rico Carty and walked Jeff Burroughs before being relieved. Rodriguez yielded a run on a single by Dick Billings, but checked the Rangers the rest of the way. Darrell Porter hit two doubles and a triple for the Brewers, drove in two of their runs and scored one.
Cubs 12, Padres 5 at Chicago (day game):
After falling behind in the first inning, 4-0, the Cubs came back with the aid of seven unearned runs to defeat the Padres, 12-5, and snap their six-game losing streak. Cito Gaston homered with two men on base to pace the Padres to their quick lead, but Jose Cardenal sparked the Cubs' rally with a three-run double in the third and a homer that tied the score in the fifth. The Cubs then added the go-ahead run in that same stanza on singles by Randy Hundley and Carmen Fanzone, plus an infield out by Gene Hiser. The rest of the Cubs' runs were unearned, including five that clinched the outcome in the sixth inning.
Reds 3, Expos 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
With help from Pedro Borbon, who relieved in the ninth inning, Ross Grimsley gained his fifth straight victory when the Reds defeated the Expos, 3-2. The Reds scored twice in the second. Bobby Tolan singled, Cesar Geronimo was hit by a pitch and, after a sacrifice by Grimsley, both runners scored on a single by Pete Rose. Joe Morgan doubled in the third and counted the deciding run on a single by Dan Driessen. Bob Bailey and Bob Stinson homered for the Expos.
Dodgers 3, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Jim Brewer pitched out of a jam, retiring Bernie Carbo on a grounder with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth inning, to enable the Dodgers to defeat the Cardinals, 3-2. Al Downing, who was the winner on a three-hitter, beat the Cardinals for the seventh straight time. The veteran lefthander helped himself to victory with a double in the third. When Willie Davis also doubled, Downing scored to break a 1-1 tie. Joe Ferguson followed with a single to send Davis home with what proved to be the deciding run.
