Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 3, Royals 1 at Boston (day game):
Since John Curtis had defeated the Royals twice previously this season, manager Eddie Kasko called on the young lefthander again and the rookie responded by pitching the Red Sox to a 3-1 victory to extend their lead over the Tigers to 1½ games in the East Division race. The Red Sox were held to only five hits by Dick Drago, but they included two doubles by Reggie Smith, who scored once on a wild pitch and another time on an error. The other Red Sox hits were singles by Rico Petrocelli, Carlton Fisk and Doug Griffin for their first run in the second inning. Smith hit his first double in the fourth inning, stole third and counted on Drago's wild pitch. The Royals notched their lone tally in the sixth on a single by John Mayberry, double by Lou Piniella and infield out by Cookie Rojas. The Red Sox added an insurance counter in the home half of the sixth. Smith doubled again and, with two out, raced home when Rojas dropped an infield fly by Petrocelli.

Yankees 3, Tigers 2 at Detroit (night game):
Three homers, the last by Roy White in the 12th inning, carried the Yankees to a 3-2 victory over the Tigers, who dropped 1½ games behind the Red Sox in the East Division race. The Tigers scored a run off Mel Stottlemyre in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Willie Horton with the bases loaded and Mickey Lolich protected that slim lead until the eighth when Thurman Munson homered for the Yankees. Lolich then made a bad pitch in the ninth to Yankee reliever Lindy McDaniel, who swung and connected for what was only the third homer in his 18 years in the major leagues. The Tigers came back to tie the score in their half of the ninth. Al Kaline singled, took third on a single by Duke Sims and scored when the throw by right fielder Rusty Torres bounced away from shortstop Gene Michael. Sparky Lyle pitched last the two innings for the Yankees and was the winner on White's homer, but the ace reliever had to work out of trouble in the Tigers' half of the 12th. With one out, Jim Northrup doubled and took third on a wild pitch. Aurelio Rodriguez lined to second baseman Horace Clarke and, after a pass to Ed Brinkman, Paul Jata struck out to end the game.

A's 8, Twins 7 at Oakland (day game):
After trailing, 7-0, the Athletics rallied dramatically to defeat the Twins, 8-7, and clinch the West Division championship. Manager Dick Williams called on 24 players, including five pitchers and four second basemen. Dal Maxvill, who was the last of the quartet at second base and wound up in the cleanup spot in the A's juggled lineup, delivered a double that drove in the winning run in the ninth inning. Steve Braun drove in three runs with a double and single to pace the Twins to their early big lead. The A's started their comeback with a homer by Mike Epstein in the fifth and added another run on a walk to Bert Campaneris, single by Sal Bando and double-play grounder by Joe Rudi in the sixth. Three runs followed in the seventh on a walk to Mike Hegan, double by Angel Mangual, single by Matty Alou, forceout grounder by Campaneris and single by Bando. The A's then tied the score in the eighth when Mangual singled after a base hit by Epstein, pass to Gene Tenace and single by Dave Duncan had loaded the bases. Bando was hit by a pitch in the ninth. Maxvill, up to sacrifice, took three balls from Dave LaRoche and a called strike. Manager Williams then switched to the hit sign and Maxvill came through with his winning double.

Phillies 2, Pirates 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Steve Carlton became only the second pitcher in N. L. history to go over the 300 mark in strikeouts when the Phillles' ace lefthander defeated the Pirates, 2-1, for his 26th victory. Carlton struck out 11 to raise his total to 303. The only other senior circuit pitcher in that class was Sandy Koufax, who topped 300 in strikeouts in 1962, '63 and '66. The Pirates' run off Carlton in the second inning was unearned. Willie Stargell reached second on a wild throw by Denny Doyle, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Manny Sanguillen. Carlton used his bat to help himself to victory. Don Money singled in the fifth and when Bob Moose threw late to second on a grounder by John Bateman, both runners were safe. Carlton doubled, driving in Money with the tying run, and Doyle singled to score Bateman with the winning run.
