Today's scores and summaries:
Angels 3, Twins 1 at California (night game):
Back-to-back homers by Andy Kosco and Ken McMullen in the second inning carried the Angels to a 3-1 victory over the Twins behind the pitching of Rudy May, who struck out 16 to tie the California club record set earlier in the season by Nolan Ryan. The Angels scored an unearned run in the first and the Twins picked up their run on a homer by Rick Renick in the second before Kosco and McMullen hit their consecutive circuit clouts off Ray Corbin in the Angels' half of the second inning.
Brewers 1, Orioles 0 at Milwaukee (day game):
Although collecting 10 hits, the Orioles were unable to score against Gary Ryerson and lost to the Brewers, 1-0. Jim Palmer, who gave up five hits, was beaten when the Brewers scored in the sixth inning on a double by Bob Heise and single by George Scott.
Yankees 1, Tigers 0 at New York (night game):
After Steve Kline allowed only three hits in the first eight innings, Sparky Lyle struggled through the ninth to save the Yankees' 1-0 victory over the Tigers. The Yankees scored their run in the fourth on a double by Bobby Murcer, groundout by Ron Blomberg and infield hit by Johnny Callison. Gates Brown greeted Lyle with a double in the ninth. Norm Cash struck out, but Bill Freehan bounced a grounder that Gene Michael knocked down. Michael was able to keep Tony Taylor, running for Brown, from advancing while Freehan reached first on the infield hit. Jim Northrup grounded out, moving Taylor to third and Freehan to second. Lyle walked Willie Horton intentionally to load the bases and then struck out Ike Brown to end the game.
A's 5, White Sox 3 at Oakland (night game):
The White Sox and Athletics battled to a 3-3 tie in a 17-inning game stopped by curfew after five hours, two minutes of play. The White Sox, after failing to hold a 2-0 lead in the regulation distance, went ahead in the 13th, 3-2, on a triple by Pat Kelly and a wild pitch, but the A's rallied to forge a new deadlock in their half when pinch-hitter Gene Tenace singled with two out to drive in Angel Mangual. The game was finished prior to the next night's regularly-scheduled contest between the clubs.
Astros 9, Braves 6 at Atlanta (night game):
A triple by Tommy Helms drove in two of the Astros' three runs in the seventh inning and clinched a 9-6 victory over the Braves. Mike Lum hit a three-run homer for the Braves in the fifth to tie the score at 6-6. Jim Wynn and Lee May singled for the Astros in the seventh and Johnny Edwards walked to load the bases. Doug Rader forced Edwards, Wynn scoring to break the tie. Helms followed with his triple to drive in May and Rader.
Cubs 8, Expos 0 at Chicago (day game):
Rick Reuschel, who emerged from his only jam by inducing Boots Day to bounce into a double play with the bases loaded in the fifth inning, pitched the Cubs to an 8-0 victory over the Expos. The Cubs settled the issue in the first inning with three runs on a double by Don Kessinger, intentional pass to Billy Williams, single by Ron Santo and double by Rick Monday. In the fifth, when the Cubs added their other runs, Reuschel batted in one and Williams plated a pair, each with a bases-loaded single.
Dodgers 6, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Breaking out of a 1-for-19 slump, Willie Crawford rapped four hits, including a homer, and drove in four runs to lead the Dodgers to a 6-2 victory over the Reds.
