Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 5, Angels 0 at California (night game):
The White Sox got five-hit pitching from Wilbur Wood, who posted his seventh shutout and 21st victory, to defeat the Angels, 5-0. Carlos May accounted for the first run with a homer in the fifth inning and, after two walks, Lee Richard also hit for the circuit. The last run was produced in the ninth when Jay Johnstone scored on the front end of a double steal with Ed Herrmann.

A's 5, Brewers 4 at Oakland (night game):
Ken Sanders walked Angel Mangual with two out and the bases loaded in the ninth inning to hand the Athletics a 5-4 victory over the Brewers. Dave May and Johnny Briggs homered for the Brewers, while Rick Monday hit one for the A's. Rick Monday walked in the ninth and was sacrificed to third. Sanders then issued two intentional passes to load the bases and struck out Joe Rudi, but the ace reliever lost his aim and walked Mangual.

Mets 5, Cubs 4 at Chicago (day game):
Nolan Ryan gained his first victory since August 7 as the Mets ended a string of six straight losses to the Cubs by winning, 5-4. Donn Clendenon homered in the second inning, Leroy Stanton drove in two runs with a double in the fifth and Bob Aspromonte supplied the decisive hit with a two-run single in the eighth.

Giants 2, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
Gaylord Perry pitched a three-hitter and the Giants took advantage of an unearned run to defeat the Astros, 2-1, and pull three games ahead of the idle Dodgers in the West division race. Willie McCovey homered for the Giants' first run in the fourth inning. The Giants loaded the bases against Don Wilson in the fifth when Perry and Ken Henderson singled and Tito Fuentes was safe on an error by Denis Menke. After Bobby Bonds went out on a short fly, McCovey was hit on the foot by a pitched ball, forcing in what proved to be the winning run. John Mayberry homered for the Astros' run in their half of the fifth.

Phillies 6, Expos 4 at Montreal (day game):
A four-run rally in the ninth inning carried the Phillies to a 6-4 victory over the Expos. The Phillies started their uprising by loading the bases on passes to Larry Bowa and Willie Montanez around a single by Mike Anderson. Deron Johnson drew a walk from Ernie McAnally to force in the first run. Greg Luzinski followed with a single, driving in two runs to put the Phillies ahead, 5-4. The extra marker counted on a throwing error by Bob Bailey.

Pirates 5, Cardinals 0 at St. Louis (night game):
Nelson Briles, making his first start against his former teammates, pitched the Pirates to a 5-0 victory over the Cardinals. The Pirates' attack included a two-run homer by Willie Stargell.
