Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 9, Indians 7 at Boston (day game):
Four hits by Carl Yastrzemski, including a homer and double, led the attack of the Red Sox in a 9-7 victory over the Indians. The Red Sox trailed early in the game, 7-2, but rallied to tie the score with the aid of a three-run homer by Billy Conigliaro. Then, in the eighth, Joe Lahoud walked, John Kennedy sacrificed and Yastrzemski doubled to break the deadlock. Rico Petrocelli followed with a single to add an insurance run.
A's 4, Angels 2 at California (night game):
Hitting his third homer in two games, Sal Bando connected for the circuit with a man on base in the 13th inning to lift the Athletics to a 4-2 victory over the Angels. The A's other runs also came on homers, one by Dave Duncan in the fifth and the other by Joe Rudi in the ninth to force the game into overtime.
Tigers 5, Orioles 1 at Detroit (night game):
Jim Northrup, who batted in four runs in the previous night's victory, drove in three more as the Tigers defeated the Orioles again, 5-1. Northrup homered in the first inning and accounted for his other RBIs with doubles in the third and fifth. After Northrup hit his two-bagger in the fifth, Al Kaline broke out of an 0-for-13 slump with a single to bat in his first run of the season.
Senators 9, Yankees 6 at New York (day game):
Although collecting 18 hits, the Senators had to huff and puff before beating the Yankees, 9-6. The Senators did not decide the game until the eighth inning when Frank Howard, who had three hits, broke a 6-6 tie with a run-scoring single.
Mets 5, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Tom Seaver extended his scoreless pitching streak to 26 innings, setting a Mets' club record, but the ace righthander needed the help of Tug McGraw before beating the Reds. 5-2. Seaver's cipher skein was snapped in the seventh when the Reds scored on a walk to Johnny Bench and a double by Willie Smith. The Reds added their other run in the eighth, forcing Seaver's departure, but McGraw, relieving with one out and runners on first and third, induced Bill Plummer to ground into a DP.
Pirates 10, Braves 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Willie Stargell, who hit three homers at Atlanta in a losing cause April 10, repeated the slugging feat in the Pirates' home park and this time helped beat the Braves, 10-2. Stargell's smashes in the first, fourth and sixth innings drove in five runs.
Dodgers 10, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
After four straight losses, Bill Singer gained his first victory of the season when the Dodgers defeated the Padres, 10-2. Dick Allen drove in three runs, two of them with a homer, and also threw out two men at the plate in the fifth inning to frustrate the Padres, who were able to score only once in that frame on a double and three singles.
Cardinals 5, Giants 3 at San Francisco (day game):
A triple by Joe Torre with the bases loaded sparked a five-run outburst by the Cardinals in the sixth inning and led to a 5-3 victory over the Giants. After Torre's triple, the Cardinals counted their other runs, providing the winning margin, on a double by Jose Cardenal and single by Joe Hague.
