Today's scores and summaries:
White Sox 7, Twins 5 at Minnesota (day game):
A wild throw by Ron Perranoski resulted in three unearned runs and gave the White Sox a 7-5 victory over the Twins, who were stopped on their four-game winning streak. Bobby Knoop homered for the White Sox in the eighth to tie the score at 4-4. Syd O'Brien singled and when Walt Williams bunted, both runners were safe on a fielder's choice. Luis Aparicio also bunted and Perranoski, trying for a forceout at third, threw wildly, O'Brien and Williams crossing the plate. Aparicio reached third on the error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Carlos May.
Yankees 11, Senators 6 at Washington (night game):
After both clubs scored five runs in the third inning, the relief pitching of John Cumberland, who gained his first major league victory, enabled the Yankees to defeat the Senators, 11-6. Cumberland yielded four hits in six and one-third innings and the only run off his deliveries was unearned. In addition, the rookie lefthander drove in a run with a single in the fourth when the Yankees scored three times to break a 5-5 tie.
Pirates 8, Braves 6 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Bill Mazeroski and Manny Sanguillen each batted in three runs to enable the Pirates to gain an 8-6 victory, although the Braves' attack included a grand-slam homer by Orlando Cepeda. The Braves also had a round-tripper by Hank Aaron, but with nobody on base. Sanguillen homered for the Pirates' first run in the fifth inning. Mazeroski got his three RBIs with a double in the seventh when the Pirates racked up five runs. Two walks, a passed ball and single by Sanguillen added the winning margin in the eighth.
