Berry Arrested In Police Raid

ATLANTA -- A hearing has been scheduled for Dec. 23 for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Bob Berry and defensive end Randy Marshall, both arrested during a raid on Marshall's apartment where sheriff's officers confiscated a small amount of marijuana. Berry, 29, was charged with obstructing officers and Marshall with operating a "disorderly house" during the Monday night raid by about 10 patrolmen. Both were released on $500 bail each early Tuesday. Deputy sheriff Carl Price said 20-year-old Angela Carol Nichols told police she was the only person at the party who had been smoking marijuana. She was charged with possession of drugs and later released on $300 bond.

Rankin M. Smith, board chairman of the Falcons, termed the incident "an unfortunate one" but added, "Cobb County authorities inform us that no Falcon players were involved in the use or possession of drugs." In a brief statement released Tuesday, Smith said internal disciplinary action would he taken in keeping with team policy. The National Football League said it had received no official report on the case and would have no comment until it did. Police said the raid came after they were tipped by a "reliable confidential source" that a pot party was taking place in Marshall's suburban apartment. The police report said "half a lid" of marijuana, worth about $10, was confiscated.
