  • President Nixon's speech on Soviet-American cooperation and the SALT talks was carried live from the Kremlin on television and radio; it is estimated to have been seen or heard by 100 million people. The President stated that the U.S. covets no one else's territory; our power will be used only to keep peace, never to break it. Most Russians were aware of the President's speech and most approved of it, though some feel that future actions would show more than words alone.

    The Vietnam problem clouded both political and economic talks during the summit meetings. The Russian people feel that Vietnam will be solved over time, and then relations between the U.S. and USSR will get considerably better. [NBC]

  • President and Mrs. Nixon attended a Baptist church in Moscow, one of just 40 churches open to worship in a city of 7 million; no Soviet leaders were present. Mrs. Nixon took a walking tour of the Kremlin and saw the thrones and carriages of the czars.   • The Duke of Windsor has died in Paris at the age of 77. As King Edward VIII, he abdicated the English throne in 1936 to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson. The Duke will be buried at Windsor Castle. [NBC]
  • Heavy fighting continued in the Central Highlands of South Vietnam near Kontum. Government forces on Highway 13 south of An Loc were hit hard. [NBC]
  • The first of three televised debates in California between George McGovern and Hubert Humphrey took place on CBS's "Face the Nation" this morning. Humphrey said that McGovern is wrong on many issues; McGovern stated that he's spoken out longer and more consistently against the Vietnam war than any other senator. [NBC]
  • A bomb in Belfast, Northern Ireland, accidentally exploded. One of the who was six killed is known to be an IRA bomb maker. [NBC]
