Documents the feat accomplished by a team of 39 Japanese climbers - only the fifth expedition ever to complete the 5½ mile climb to the highest spot on earth. The most recent successful ascent of the 29,000-foot-high Himalayan peak took place in the spring of 1970. Charles Kuralt reports on one of man's supreme adventures that resulted in some deaths and injuries, but also produced some of the most spectacular film taken at the summit.

In the Lane household segment, Mrs. Lane (Kay Medford) is persuaded by her daughter (Marian Mercer) to turn her charm on Mr. Karpopolis (Lou Jacobi). The Ding-a-Ling Sisters sing "Every Woman Needs a Man". Dean sings "Make the World Go Away" and does a medley with Art.
