Series returns for its 17th year with a new format: Lassie is entirely on her own with no regular supporting cast. Premiering a seven-part story, Lassie meets a mate only to be separated by a battle with a killer dog. Badly injured and unconscious at the side of the road, Lassie, who is carrying a litter, is found by a stranger who takes her with him.

Filmed at raceways around the globe, the hour focuses on four points of view - the driver, the machine, the spectator and the race. Highlights of a pro-am race at Ontario feature brief appearances by Dick Smothers, James Garner, Kirk Douglas, Arte Johnson, Glenn Ford, Stephen Boyd and many other celebrities. Among the race drivers appearing during the hour are Bobby Isaac, Jackie Oliver, Denis Hulme, Mario Andretti, Dan Gurney, Stirling Moss, Al and Bobby Unser, Graham Hill, A.J. Foyt and John Surtees.
