The Kansas City Chiefs scored the first two times they had the ball and went on to defeat the Green Bay Packers, giving Tom Bettis a successful debut as head coach. Jan Stenerud's 23-yard field goal and Mike Livingston's three-yard TD pass to Henry Marshall gave the Chiefs an early 10-0 lead. A Chester Marcol field goal of 31 yards closed the gap to 10-3 after three quarters. After Ed Podolak scored from the 1, the Packers used a bit of trickery to spring Terdell Middleton loose on an 85-yard touchdown run on the ensuing kickoff.
