Jim Plunkett threw for 183 yards and two touchdowns as the 49ers dealt the Rams their first loss and first shutout ever in the Coliseum. After a scoreless first half, Plunkett and former Ram Willie McGee combined for a 36-yard scoring play on the first possession of the second half, and on the next series Tom Mitchell caught a six-yard pass for a touchdown. The 49ers' defense, which sacked James Harris 10 times for 97 yards lost, set up Steve Mike-Mayer's 18-yard field goal when Tommy Hart hit Harris and Jimmy Webb gathered in the ensuing fumble at the 14-yard line.
