Walter Payton rushed for 104 yards and one touchdown, his third 100-yard game and a league-leading total 408 yards, as the Bears dealt the Redskins their worst defeat under George Allen and held Washington to its fewest yards total offense, 119, since 1961. Bob Avellini scored the first Chicago touchdown on a four-yard run and passed six yards to James Scott for another. Joe Theismann led the Redskins in the second half and hit Jackie Smith with a one-yard touchdown pass with one second left, avoiding a shutout.
