Quarterback Dan Fouts led San Diego on touchdown drives of 74 and 86 yards in the third quarter to overcome a 16-13 halftime lead by Kansas City and give the Chargers their first opening day victory in five years. Chiefs' quarterback Mike Livingston completed 20 of 34 passes for 236 yards including first half touchdown passes to tight ends Walter White and Billy Masters, but the Chargers' defense shut out Kansas City in the second half.
