Lydell Mitchell set a National Football League record with 40 carries while gaining 156 yards and scoring once in Baltimore's first victory of the season. After losing five in a row and changing coaches in the midst of the slump, the Colts came to life in New York with 355 offensive yards behind quarterback Bert Jones. In addition to throwing a scoring pass to Cotton Speyrer, Jones rushed for 92 yards and two touchdowns. New York was held to 60 yards rushing, scoring on a blocked punt in the second quarter and two touchdown passes by Joe Namath in the last three minutes.
