. . . where the 1970s live forever!

All NFL game summaries for 12/09/1973:

Atlanta's wild card chances were jolted when Jim Bakken kicked six field goals, one short of the record he set in 1967, in a 32-10 St. Louis victory. The Falcons took an early 10-0 lead but dropped their second straight when St. Louis sacked the quarterback five times, forced five turnovers and ground out 243 yards on the ground. Terry Metcalf gained 100 yards and Donny Anderson 82 for the Cardinals. Gary Keithley, filling in for the injured Jim Hart, played the entire game.

Despite a blanket of wet snow, O. J. Simpson gained 219 yards on 22 carries and moved within 61 yards of Jim Brown's NFL rushing record of 1,863 set in 1963. The performance was O. J.'s tenth 100-yard game of the year, an NFL record. O. J. scored once and rookie QB Joe Ferguson threw two touchdown passes to Bob Chandler to keep alive Buffalo's wild card hopes. Jim Plunkett had his second best day, completing 17 of 41 passes for 292 yards for the Patriots. Bills' rookie Wallace Francis returned a kickoff 90 yards for a score, his second TD return of the season.

Roger Staubach pierced Washington's defense with 16 completions for 223 yards in a 27-7 victory that enabled Dallas to tie the Redskins for the NFC East lead (the Cowboys made up a seven-point deficit in head-to-head point differential and would win if the teams finished in a division tie). Curt Knight of the Redskins missed field goal attempts of 23, 28 and 37 yards in the second quarter but Dallas led only 3-0 at halftime. The Redskins were held to 59 yards rushing. Sonny Jurgensen went all the way for Washington at quarterback. The only Redskin score came on a blocked punt return by Ken Stone with less than four minutes to play.

Bill Munson threw two touchdown passes and Mel Farr scored twice as Detroit handed Chicago its fifth straight setback. Farr's first touchdown was set up by Lem Barney's 32-yard run after intercepting a Gary Huff pass. The victory clinched second place in the NFC Central for the Lions and squared their record at 6-6-1. Huff replaced Bobby Douglass who suffered a knee injury early in the game.

Pittsburgh remained tied with Cincinnati for the AFC Central lead and broke a three-game losing streak by holding Houston to 83 yards total offense. Terry Bradshaw, making his first start since suffering a shoulder separation six weeks earlier, threw two touchdown passes but also was intercepted four times, including one returned 87 yards by Joe Blahak (longest in the AFC in 1973) that set up the Oilers' score. Four interceptions by the Steelers gave them the NFL lead with 32. Roy Gerela kicked four field goals and boosted his scoring total to 110 points, tops in the AFC.
