Darrell Porter's two-run homer capped a five-run seventh inning that lifted the Cardinals to a 9-4 decision over the Cubs. The game was tied, 4-4, when Lonnie Smith began the bottom of the seventh by being hit by a pitch. He reached second on a balk, moved to third on a safe bunt by Ozzie Smith and scored on Keith Hernandez' single.

After George Hendrick struck out, Dane Iorg singled in another run. Hernandez scored on a throwing error by catcher Jody Davis and Porter climaxed the rally with his round-tripper. Doug Bair pitched three scoreless innings in relief to earn the victory. [The Sporting News]
