After eight years in the American League, Fergie Jenkins made his triumphant return to Wrigley Field, combining with Lee Smith on a six-hitter as the Cubs won their home opener, 5-0, over the Mets. The Cubs scored twice in the fourth inning when Larry Bowa stroked a leadoff single and Bill Buckner followed with a homer deep into the right field bleachers. Leon Durham delivered an RBI single in the sixth and Keith Moreland cracked a two-run single in the eighth. The game was played in 34-degree temperature. [The Sporting News]
