Rick Monday belted a two-out home run to center field off Steve Rogers in the ninth inning, giving the Dodgers a 2-1 victory over the Expos and their third N.L. pennant in the last five seasons. Monday had been only 1-for-5 in the Championship Series, but had hit six homers during the month of September for the Dodgers. After the game had been delayed for 26 minutes because of rain, the Expos took a 1-0 lead in the first when Andre Dawson's double-play grounder plated Tim Raines, who had doubled.

Monday singled and scored the Dodgers' first run in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Fernando Valenzuela, who needed last out relief help by Bob Welch to preserve his three-hit victory. Montreal's ace starting pitcher Rogers was called on to relieve Ray Burris and he was charged with the loss. It was only the third time in Rogers' career and first since July 3, 1978, that the righthander had been called upon in a relief role. [The Sporting News]
