Jason Thompson belted a two-run pinch-homer in the eighth inning that enabled the Pirates to edge the Cubs, 3-2. Thompson's blast followed a one-out pinch-single by John Milner and scored pinch-runner Lee Lacy, who had stolen second base and reached third on a throwing error by Cubs catcher Jody Davis. Chicago had taken a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth on a leadoff triple by Jim Tracy that was followed by a homer by Hector Cruz. [The Sporting News]
