A three-run rally in the eighth inning lifted the Phillies to a 7-5 victory over the Cubs, Chicago's 11th straight loss. The Phils were behind, 5-4, when Bake McBride began the eighth with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Lonnie Smith, who went to third on a single by Mike Schmidt and scored on a single by Garry Maddox. A single by Larry Bowa plated Schmidt and, after Rawly Eastwick replaced Dick Tidrow on the hill for the Cubs, a single by Bob Boone scored Maddox. [The Sporting News]
