Winning his own game, Joe Niekro singled in the 17th inning, scoring Enos Cabell, to bring the Astros a 1-0 victory over the Cubs. Cabell led off with a single and took second on a sacrifice by Terry Puhl.

After an intentional pass to Jose Cruz, Denny Walling forced Cruz as Cabell moved to third. Niekro, who pitched two innings in relief, then lofted a long fly over the head of Bill Buckner in left field. [The Sporting News]
