Keith Hernandez homered for the Cardinals' first run and then walked to set up the deciding counter in a 2-1 victory over the Pirates. John Fulgham held the Pirates to four hits. Bert Blyleven also gave up only four hits and struck out 12 before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning.

Dave Roberts, replacing Blyleven, walked Hernandez to open the eighth. Bobby Bonds ran for Hernandez and took second on a single by Ted Simmons. Dane Iorg struck out trying to bunt.
