Dave Kingman clouted two of the Cubs' five homers, including a grand slam that climaxed a seven-run outburst in the eighth inning and beat the Mets, 12-9. Kingman's first homer of the game came with a man on base in the sixth.

The Mets passed Bill Buckner intentionally to load the bases in the eighth, hoping that Kingman again would hit into a double play as the Cubs' slugger did in the previous inning, but Kingman wrecked the strategy with his smash off Neil Allen. [The Sporting News]
